Post 446: Falls Church Arts Gallery Member Show A-L Jun 6-Jul 12, 2026

Falls Church Arts Gallery Member Show A-L Jun 6-Jul 12

The annual member art show at the Falls Church Arts Gallery for members initialed A-L opens on Saturday, June 6 and runs until July 12, 2026. The art reception is also June 6 from 7 to 9pm. Come and see the art, including mine!

My Art in the FCA Show

With my initialed last name of Liguria, that puts me in this art show as a member of the Falls Church Arts. Members are allowed to enter one piece per artist so my entry is "Garden Patio" which is 16x20x1.5 in acrylics. It reminded me of a patio I sat on while in Sicily some years ago - sort of a garden with a view that I wish I had now. Note the hoe and garden shoes that were left there for the gardener. Garden Patio won an Honorable Mention Ribbon earlier this year at the Fredericksburg Fine Art Show and Sale at the Dorothy Hart Community Center on Canal Street.

Falls Church Art Gallery is at 700-B W. Broad St. (Rte. 7), Falls Church, VA 22046 (street level)

Tuesday-Friday - 11 am - 6 pm
Saturday - 11 am - 4 pm
Sunday - 11 am - 4 pm

Post 394: In the Works - More Morning Glory Flowers!

In the Works - More Morning Glory Flowers!

I'm on a bit of a morning glory kick at the moment as my mini garden blooms this summer. Absolutely, I am loving the summer's gifts of fresh tomatoes and basil, but the daily changes in the whites, pinks, purples, blues, and lavenders in the morning glory flowers get my attention too.

"Oh, what a beautiful morning! Oh, what a beautiful day!*..." At least I don't come out of the house each morning singing at the top of my lungs, much to the appreciation of my neighbors. (Yes, guilty of watching so many musicals, growing up where everyone breaks out in a song.)

These morning glories love the sunrise! Then they get shy once the morning starts aging, falling in upon themselves.  But wait, more will open tomorrow.
Here is what I have painted thus far this summer.

Painting Name: Garden Flower Glories

More practice in the use of the watercolor pencils than anything, I enjoy using these little watercolor treasures since using them in Valerie Larson's class. Basically its a "Draw it and drown it" style with watercolor pencils - I'm loving it.

Medium: Watercolor Pencils and Acrylic Pens
Size: 9x12 Mixed Media Paper
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

Painting Name: The Morning Glory Climb

This one will have morning glories, they are coming. I promise. I planted the seeds! I played with watercolor markers to see what it would do...not a fan as yet. My yard is tiny living here in Woodbridge, VA. That's fine. Town houses often have tiny yards but I am determined to grow a few things other than weeds.

Even more practice with watercolor pencils and mixed media paper. This might be in preparation for the next one.

Medium: Watercolor Pencils and Acrylic Pens (so far)
Size: 9x12 Mixed Media Paper
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

Updated July 25, 2025 7:39am. See, I said I planted those seeds!

Painting Name: no name so far

Acrylic paintings start off so sadly. Their beginnings are not much to celebrate. His destiny may be more morning glories. That's the plan.

Medium: Acrylic
Size: 12x20 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

Morning Glory Inspiration

Here are some snapshots of my morning inspiration...ok, maybe I am singing a more muted "Oh, what a beautiful morning..." in the backyard in the am, but my neighbors are not usually out that early. The plants don't mind.

Uh oh, something is chewing on my morning glories! Perhaps they like them better than the vegetables though. Choose your battles.

The first of the Morning Glory paintings I've started and he is 4x12 on canvas in acrylics

I didn't realize at the time I had captured this fellow's mug shot.

I may update the paintings as I get them finished up so check back!

Post 373: Garden Patio a Painting in Progress

Painting Name: Garden Patio

Are you one of those gifted with a green thumb? Do you look forward to that first sense of spring in the air? Does your heart flutter at the first sighting of the crocus? Do you go daffy over the emerging daffodils? I do. And I wish I could paint ALL of it!

SKU: 04O23ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20x1.5 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No
Available: Yes

Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

What Brought About this Painting?

I have a greenish thumb I believe. Most of the things I try to grow usually survive. My yard may be tiny these days, but I love coaxing a tomato or two along for a great sandwich. And yes, I go daffy over the first signs of the crocus and the daffodils.

O-if-only, I had a wonderful garden space and patio where things might grow! Not too overwhelming, a garden size just right. An English garden. An Italian villa garden. A garden patio even! Hence, this painting came about as the days passed with the daily progress of emerging plants coming up from the ground...and a vision of past gardens and patios.

Garden Patio Painting in Progress Images…

A painting starts off rather butt ugly don't they? They do for me. I take a rather watered down burnt sienna and go over the whole project. Sometimes I draw on the canvas first, but more often I do it after the blocking in of the BS. (burnt sienna, good acronym)

Know where the light is coming from - where the sun is, where the horizon is - get a feel where things will go.

What will I grow on the patio? Decisions to be made. My patio would have a wonderful view from every window, every entry way, of course.

Then after the patio is planted, what else will be on my patio? Shall i have a garden bench, a table for a cup of coffee?

Garden Patio Painting Completed

This painting is entered into the Prince William Art Society Member Exhibition at the ARTfactory in Manassas, VA that will begin May 15 and run until May 30.

Paintings are an artist's vision, a piece of an artist's soul, are they not?

Come out and see the show!

You've heard the saying about supporting local art, I am sure. One of the more common versions lately is to support local artists - while they're still alive! If you think about that, it makes more sense and perhaps its more affordable too. ; )

Post 186: Stop and Smell the Roses 8x3 Acrylic on Canvas

Painting Name: Stop and Smell the Roses

Stop and Smell the Roses, 8x8 acrylic on canvas, will be very similar to another painting I did, called "White Fenced Garden", which recently sold.

SKU: 09DS21ACL2
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 8x8 Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: No
Check availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

What Brought About this Painting?

My similar painting recently sold, which was great. Interestingly, it had the most views of any of my paintings, especially on Etsy, but I actually sold it at Clearbrook Center of the Arts, in Lake Ridge, VA at Tackett's Mill. This one will be 8x8, where the previous version as 6x6.

Post 120: White Fenced Garden, 6x6 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: White Fenced Garden

Life began in a garden. It is good to remember that.

SKU: 05BM21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Price: SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

What Brought About this Painting?
A design element in a garden is to make you wonder what you will see in your next step, or around the corner, or if you take one path as opposed to another, or what is beyond that gate, walkway, or fence.

A painting can take a piece of that element too, I believe - what is on the other side of the fence or at the end of the walk way? If the painting was continued, what would I see? A sort of - If the story carried on, what happens to the characters? That is my thinking on this...I want to see what the rest of the garden looks like.
