What Brought About this Painting?

I like painting 'local to me' places and things here in the great state of Virginia. One of the most historical of all places and houses in Virginia, is Mount Vernon in Alexandria. When I was in elementary school, Bucknell Elementary in Alexandria, Mount Vernon was a field trip spot. It has changed a lot over the years; the museum itself is incredible, but to lean on the mantel in George Washington's dining room is so cool.

Actually it was the trying to NOT use the color black in a painting at all. Clouds made the perfect subject. Sure there are gray clouds which make you think to blend black and white, but that is not how I painted them.

I used blue, purple, white, yellow, red, and burnt sienna.

Sometimes you paint something just for the challenge of it. To make life slightly easier for a dark painting, you do start with a black canvas. But golly, layers and layers of blue, purple, gray, black, white...trying to think what else I can throw at this thing.

Do you remember the childhood chant, sing-song: 

Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away home, 

Your house is on fire

And your children are gone?

A weird little ditty really. It was just a thing you said to encourage the cute little beetle with the polka dots to move along when they land on you to "shoo-away". Seems it was considered bad luck to swat at ladybugs. Anyway, ladybugs always did seem to be such "friendly, wee bugs" as opposed to some other types of insects.

This has been fun to paint. Trying to think what all could be found around a shipwreck and what all was described in December to include. Sharks, check, pirate ship wreck, check. Treasure chest, absolutely! But I am not done YET...
