Post 436: What are ACEOs?

What are ACEOs?

You may have seen ACEOs on the internet already while scrolling through your social media feeds - artists making miniature artwork masterpieces and offering them for sale. But what are they?

Photo by Daisy D on Unsplash

ACEOs

Art Cards, Editions and Originals, known as ACEOs are popular small, collectible art items that are 2.5x3.5 inches, made in any medium. These miniature cards evolved from ATCs, which are Artist Trading Cards (keyword traded), while the ACEOs are typically sold...or at least offered for sale.

ACEOs are great for whimsical, nature-inspired, and folk-style artworks in the form of landscapes, still life, animals, and so much more. The sky is not always the limit for artists you know.

I've heard many artists say they only work large while other artists are quite comfortable working on tiny treasures. Imagine a Starry Night on a baseball card! ACEOs may not be for every artist, but they can be a lot of fun to make.

Let's deep dive into the make-up of ACEOs:

  1. Art Cards for ACEOs are the general term of small 2.5x3.5 inch (64x89mm) blank cards to create small artworks. It is the Size that must be exact.
  2. Editions refer to the limited print runs, for example 1/25, 2/25.
  3. Originals are of course, one-of-a-kind unique artworks.

How They Are Made

Art Cards are created on various cardstock papers; they come in 140lb watercolor paper, blank heavy weight thick cardstock paper, and do look for acid-free cardstock, but it is the exact size that matters. The cards need to be packaged in card sleeves that will protect the art. Use the best paper for the type of medium you plan on using.

You can use almost any medium to make ACEOs like:

  • Painted using watercolor, acrylic, oil, and oil pastels finished with a fixative. (Ensure paper can handle the paint being used to prevent warping.)
  • Drawing using pens, inks, pencils, markers, and silky crayons
  • Mixed media or collage
  • Digital prints

What your cards are made of will feature the medium used for best effect.

Some definitions of ACEOs say they are originals and limited-edition prints, but the originals are the more valuable ones.

Why Make ACEOs, to be Collected!

  • The ACEOs are affordable for the fine art collector, making them a potential entry point to your art.
  • Most are priced under $25, making them very budget-friendly usually, but there are some priced much higher depending on the artist, artist experience, artist popularity.
  • They ACEO is easily produced, packaged, stored, shipped, transported, and to sell.
  • For the artist, an ACEO is great for practicing and experimenting with new ideas and styles.
  • An ACEO can go anywhere - displayed on any nook and cranny, bookshelf, side table.
  • Collectors may prefer art-themed collections of ACEOs by subject, like all birds, all sunflowers, cats, teacups, all lions, tigers, and bears. So consider making a subject series.
  • They are little art treasures! Great for gifts, cozy decor, and small pops of color.
  • Support the art, support the artists!
  • The ACEOs are popular on Etsy and Ebay - just do a quick search. Actually, its always a good idea to do the research to look at all angles to decide if this is something you want to consider doing.

ACEO Tips and Ideas

  • Use up your own watercolor paper by cutting your own 2.5x3.5 cards, but be precise. Purchasing precut cards is very affordable.
  • The whole point is to not use a lot of time to make them, try to keep it UNDER 10-15 minutes if you can!!
  • Sealing - use a sealer or micro glaze to finish and protect the card.
  • Artists mark the back of the card with their signature, date, title, and edition number. Include your email and website too.
  • When packaging in their protective sleeves, do include a business card too.
  • Think big - Have a mini-art gallery!
  • Layout a bunch of cards and color them all at once in a solid color, either all one color or multiple colors. Then take some cards with you wherever you go to make them while out and about.
  • Brushes for painting ACEO tend to be size 000 to size four.
  • If you have a stamp on the back or include a Certificate of Authenticity with the card, it can add value to the work. Include a thank you card too.

Post 323: 24 Mini Paintings and Counting!

24 Mini Paintings and Counting!

Many mini paintings have appeared! These are 3x4 inch small artworks that come with a mini easel and sell for between $25 to $30 depending on how much work goes into them. They are so fun to paint!

Bumper Crop of Minis

This current crop of minis are for the most part based on beach and water themes with lighthouses, duck decoys and mallard ducks, dolphins, sharks, shore birds, blue crabs, boats, a mermaid, sea turtles and sea shells - not pictured are sand dollar shells under water. I did paint more after this picture was taken.

Donna Liguria's 3x4 acrylic on mini stretched canvases - have a favorite?

My favorite one is center bottom - the "Tumblin' Ducklings" I recently watched a video with the momma Mallard leading her babies to the edge of a dock or the edge of a pond, then she leaps/glides to the water and urges her babies to follow her. It is hysterical to then see the ducklings bravely jump. Actually, its more like they throw their fuzzy bodies over the edge and splat into the water below. This is my version of the tumbling fuzzies.

This mini is called "Daffodil Inspection" 3x4 acrylic

I have purchased 3 boxes of 100 3x4 mini canvases since 2021 and I have painted around 275 of them so far. I take these minis to the art shows I go to, and I will be at Stonebridge, at Open Space Arts this Saturday for a popup show in front of the gallery with the Prince William Art Society. That and I have art inside the gallery for the "Strut Your Stuff" art show. So, the Chilifest is this weekend, come on by!

15000 #140 Potomac Town Center

(across from DSW)
Chilifest Saturday, September 9, 2023 11am to 6pm

Also, I will be at Arts Alive on Sunday, September 10 once again for this marvelous art show at Hylton Performing Arts Center 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, VA 20110 12-5pm https://www.pwcartscouncil.org/artsalive/

So come by and say hello, see the art, and definitely browse the Minis!

Post 320: A People's Choice Award, Book Shelf Art and More

A People's Choice Award, Book Shelf Art and More

I've been a busy little Art-Bee recently - painting up a storm - actually painting up the beach paintings. And then surprisingly, I won second place in the People's Choice Awards at Open Space Arts for the July-August Show. I also am the Blog Admin of not only this blog, by the Prince William Art Society's (PWAS) blog called "Artistry Spin". Here are some of the things I've been Art-Beeing, AKA Art Binging, on.

For Those That Serve Art Show at Open Space Arts

In July and August at the Open Space Arts Gallery in Woodbridge, Virginia, my painting "Washington DC Cherry Blossoms" just won Second Place as voted on by the gallery visitors. What a surprise! There was so many, many wonderful paintings for that show - that just ended Sunday, August 20.
My painting "Washington DC Cherry Blossoms" 10x20 Acrylic on Canvas

Open Space Arts Gallery 15000 #140 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, Virginia

The new show is called "Strut Your Stuff" which opens Wednesday, August 23, 2023 and will run until September 17. I have about 12-13 pieces in this show. As always, come by the gallery and enjoy ALL of the art.

Book Shelf Art

As many of you know, I paint a lot of mini paintings. They are typically 3x4 mini canvases on about ANY subject and I sell them with the mini easel. I'm also painting a lot of 4x4 gallery wrapped small canvases that do not have a hanging mechanism (wire or hook) that I am now calling "Book Shelf Art". They are meant to be sitting in a book case or shelf (any nook or cranny), and enjoyed there, not taking up any wall space. Here are some samples of what I am currently working on.,

"Bottoms Up" 4x4 Acrylic on Canvas - a swan doing a dive

"Cygnet Fluff Baby" 4x4 Acrylic on Canvas - a baby swan
"Lighthouse 2 Mini" 3x4  Acrylic on Canvas with Easel

"Decoy 4 Head Turn Mini" 3x4  Acrylic on Canvas with Easel

"Decoy and Duck Mini" 3x4  Acrylic on Canvas with Easel
"Sea The Turtle" 4x12 Acrylic on Canvas (wired for hanging also)

And there are so many more minis in my inventory with more on the way. Book Shelf Art makes great gifts too.

Blog Writing Is Ever Ongoing

The PWAS Artistry Spin Blog is found at https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/ On it we have art tips, art shows, member pictures and all the artsy things we are up to.

Here on my own blog of course, are found what I am up to - paintings, shows, occasionally thoughts (believe it or not, I occasionally have a thought), and/or places I go.

On either blog, your follow, your comments are always welcome and appreciated. The Blog Admin (me) must approve them before they show of course, to weed out the spammers.

Post 314: Duck Landing and Swan Incoming Minis

Duck Landing and Swan Incoming Minis

In a recent trip to North Carolina to visit a friend, I enjoyed sitting out on their wonderful 'extended living room' deck and watching the water, the pier, clouds and birds. The birds were especially fun to watch. Some traveling in groups - one right after the other, some raising their families.

Also, note that in my Etsy Shop, I am currently having a sale of 10% off anything $50 or up! June 28- July 10, 2023.

Painting Name: Duck Landing Mini

SKU: 06AT23ACM
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 3x4 Mini Stretched Canvas with Mini Easel
Edition Year: 2023

Duck Landing and Swan Incoming are inspired by a recent vacation in North Carolina. These images were very close to finished when the picture was taken.

Every morning, we had to watch for the duck family. Upon arrival Mom Duck had 5 babies. The next day, only 4. But the babies following their mom around and their antics were so cute.

And there were what we called "the teenagers". We wondered what the story was on these ducklings that wandered about every day on their own, but had no mom. They were a number of weeks older than the other batch of wee ducklings, but they were on their own.

Watching the birds that "fished" were also interesting to watch, and hear. Suddenly you would hear a large splash and see whatever bird dived in for their breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Also, the bird landings...flying in low and SPLASH! Gliding in for stop.

My plan is to do a few water and bird paintings inspired by flight, swim, and landings on the water.

Painting Name: Swan Incoming Mini

Medium: Acrylic
Size: 3x4 Mini Stretched Canvas with Mini Easel

Have a great 4th of July weekend!

Post 313: Red Wine Glasses on Mini Easels in the Works!

Red Wine Glasses on Mini Easels in the Works!

I often look at painting these days as why paint just one? If space allows, I often have more then one painting going on and occasionally of the same subject. Here are a couple of my latest mini paintings, with the red wine glasses in progress.

Also, note that in my Etsy Shop, I am currently having a sale of 10% off anything $50 or up!

Painting Name: Red Wine Glass 1

I like a challenge when painting - usually. Glass and reflections are/or can be a challenge. Clear glass, liquid, transparency are all interesting explorations. And its definitely too early in the day to break open a bottle of wine but I can try to paint one or two.

Red Wine Glass 1 on the left and Red Wine Glass 2 on the right...watch the mini painting progress in pictures below. Follow my blog and comments are welcome!

SKU: 06AU23ACM

Are you a red wine fan or white wine? Maybe a Rose? Been to any nice wineries lately?

Post 292: Open Space Arts Next Art Show and Projects

Open Space Arts Next Art Show and Projects

A flurry of activity and artists (artivity) coming in and out as soon as the gallery closes, marks the end of an art show. The artwork that did not sell at the Open Space Art gallery is coming down from the walls Sunday and Monday, February 26 and 27. A lot of the artwork changed over the month, because a lot of it was sold and replaced with other works, so a very successful show! Hopefully the artists are taking home LESS art and prints than they walked in with a month ago.

Meanwhile, new artwork comes in and is set around the gallery in preparation of going up on the walls. So what is next to go up in the gallery?

What is the Next Show at Open Space Arts?
At Open Space Arts at Stonebridge, beginning on March 1, 2023 is 'Women in Literature' for March being Women's month, so the artworks are based on the writings of women. Too bad the Wizard of Oz and Cinderella weren't written by women. I had those covered.

Mini Ruby Slippers 3x4 Acrylic by Donna Liguria

Nonetheless, I do have some artwork and prints in this next art show. I believe there will be 29 total LOCAL Prince William County artists this month, and I have seen some of the artwork submitted....ooooo, what a treat! These are my paintings that will be there. As always, MUCH better in person!

East Coast Sunrise 20x20 Acrylic - reminded me of a book by Susan Wiggs who wrote Summer By the Sea and Dockside and The Ocean Between Us

Pink Parasol Acrylic 16x20 - reminded me of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women to a degree, perhaps around that time period

Mini Painting Tiger Face 3x4 Acrylic - inspiration Karen Blixen

Wine Party 16x20 Acrylic for Jane Austin Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler because no book club should be without wine. And wine makes a party...

Open Beach Invitation 8x10 Acrylic - again, Susan Wiggs - Summer By the Sea

Mini Canvas Momma Cat and 3 Little Kittens 3x4 Acrylic - inspiration Eliza Lee Cabot Follen who wrote The Three Little Kittens of course.

Mini Canvas 3 Little Kittens 3x4 Acrylic - inspiration Eliza Lee Cabot Follen (update SOLD)

Cape Lookout Lighthouse 12x24 Acrylic - inspiration ML Stedman, the writer of The Light Between Oceans

I keep thinking, "Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh my!" But that's The Wizard of Oz again, and L.Frank Baum was a guy.  This was an Animal Skin Pattern Series I did, of a Cheetah, Giraffe, Leopard, Tiger and a Zebra and all are 10x10 in Acrylic. Giraffe sold but I do have prints coming for it. The book author referenced is Karen Blixen, the writer of Out of Africa

Jellyfish Hijinks 8x16 Acrylic - inspired by Rachel Poliquin, the writer of The Strangest Thing in the Sea: And Other Curious Creatures of the Deep

Sun, Sand, Surf Seashore 16x20 Acrylic - Susan Wiggs inspired

Other Painting Projects?

Definitely other painting projects on the easel and planned. Here are a few:

Fly Like an Eagle and Blackbird, both 6x6 in Acrylic and in progress

The Fish Aren't Biting at the Lake 16x20 in Acrylic

I've also been gearing up on my print inventory, updating my Etsy page as well as my website. Of course, blog posts here and on the PWAS Artistry Spin Blog are always on the radar. The gallery has art receptions to go to which are always fun as well.

But always, the next canvas is always on my mind. How about you?

The Artist Reception is Friday, February 3 at 6:30 and the public is welcome - so come and enjoy the show!

Post 226: 100 Mini Paintings this Year and Counting

100 Mini Paintings this Year and Counting

A box of 100 3x4 Canvases arrived at my house about mid-year with the thought of Christmas gifts dancing in my head. Whether for sale or given as gifts myself, that was the thought. Here it is December 28, 2021 and I am on mini canvas 99 and 100 looking at me blankly. UPDATE: I added #99 and #100 at the end.

I've sold a fair amount of them, I've given away some too - especially this just passed Christmas. They may be small, but they be mighty (occasionally).

I've painted rabbits, flowers, mini landscapes, birds, cats, waterfalls, poinsettias, snowmen, dogwood trees, giraffes, hamsters, hedgehogs, sailboats, dandelions, bees, roosters, goldfish and koi fish. And flip flops, bird eggs, lighthouses and American Flags.

Some are painted to replace others that are gone. It seems that every time I paint a peacock, a sea turtle, a hobbit house - they disappear, thankfully. But I feel the need to replace them!

I read not long ago that paintings are little pieces of the artist that painted them, so when sold or given away, the recipient has a piece of that artist. No matter the length of time spent on creating that piece, the artist gives of him or herself into that artwork. It is wonderful to be able to share what I create with another person and have them enjoy it.

And wouldn't you know, in early December, another box of 100 3x4 Canvases arrived at my house, ready to be opened. Little pieces of me...

The Hedgehog, the Flag, the gray upside down Cat and one of the Black Cats are gone. The larger paintings, "Pink Parasol" and "East Coast Beach Sunrise" are both waiting on the wiring and their blog posts are coming soon.
