Post 408: Out to Art at the Mill and 3 Fox Winery

Out to Art at the Mill and 3 Fox Winery

The biannual Art at the Mill art show and sale are about to begin. The show will start on Saturday, September 20 and run until Sunday, October 5,2025. The art delivery day for Sandra McClelland Lewin and I was Saturday, August 30, 12 noon, so off to 15 Tannery Lane, Milwood, Virginia (also called Boyce, VA) we went with art in the back of the SUV.

Art Delivery to the Mill

The day was gorgeous and when art delivery day is so bright, sunny and just cool enough that a sweater or light jacket is needed, well, that certainly makes delivering art all that much sweeter. Barely a cloud in the sky, here are some photos I took Saturday from the Burwell Morgan Mill, which is a live, working mill by the way. They have a grinding schedule up and sell their flours and grains - which is another great reason to visit the mill.

After checking in your art at the far right table and getting your art labels, you unwrap your art at the second table. The volunteers get your labels attached to the artwork and other helpers then take the art off to either be placed upon the walls or off to the top floor.

Art at the Mill juries in about 1000 pieces of artwork and sculpture from about 300 artists. As you can see from the photos, even with stacking the artwork like a puzzle, that is a LOT of art - in all kinds of sizes. So not everything will be up on the walls on the first few days of the show. But online, on about Friday, September 19 - but definitely by Saturday, September 20, ALL of the artwork will be available for sale online. The artwork sold MUST be picked up, they do not ship.

The Online Web Gallery of all the artworks juried in is where you can watch, in nearly real time, what is sold. You can filter the view to find your own works too.

Have a look at what we saw that had already been delivered on Friday and Saturday before we arrived. We saw plenty of "OH WOWs!" And we watched for a few moments as a few of our own pieces were hung. By the way, if you want to see the artwork that the Prince William Art Society members Sandra Lewin, Bettie Sperty, and Mark Clifton, see this blog post on the PWAS Artistry Spin Blog called Art at the Mill Fall Art Show with PWAS

You can see the flight of stairs up to the 4th floor where a lot of art is stored. Once artwork sells, it is immediately taken down and quickly replaced with artwork from upstairs. In the case of art being sold online, the artwork is taken down and stored wrapped up on the main floor, ready for pickup. You can click on any of these photos for a larger image - I do encourage you to do that! Crazy fantastic art to see - and so many creative, sometimes quirky, but awesomely crafted works to see.

Very gradually, I am starting to recognize some of the area artist's work from around the area. Of course, once the show is finalized and the labels are next to each piece, that will help too. Even the arrangement of the art up on the walls now will change over the next couple of weeks.

As the artists deliver their art, they wander the mill to see what else is up. I spotted one of my 'just-delivered' pieces - "Ben's Chili Bowl" (in Washington DC) 16x20 in acrylic, waiting to go up on the walls.

And just below that photo, I watched as the fellow was hanging my painting called "Art Delivery to the Mill" in acrylic 14x14 next to Sandra's "Owl in Oak Tree" 18x24 in acrylic and metallic Gold Ink.

Here's my painting of "Art Delivery to the Mill" because its what today was! For the Spring Art at the Mill, when we delivered art, I was walking around and sitting outside watching all the artists going into the main floor delivering their art and thought what a nice painting that would make. I take a lot of pictures each time I come to the mill show, but I had to take my reference photo. In the Spring, the trees were just starting to fill in.

All the artists delivering their art come there with such hope of a great show, hoping their works will be seen and enjoyed, and perhaps purchased.

The aim is to NOT have to do the art pickup day!

Sandra and I walked down the side of the mill and wondered at the sound of the water rushing down the creek - and how pleasant a sound that would be. What a beautiful view.

The artist reception is on Sunday, September 28 from 2-5pm and we very typically go to that. Its a great time to meet so many other artists from all over Virginia. When we go, the first order of business is to play 'find your art' if it hasn't sold (YET).

We've heard the volunteers say that by the time of the art reception, all the artwork stored upstairs is down and up on the walls by then. The other thing the artists hope for is more beautiful weather during the show, as that brings out the gallery visitors.
We did see Mark Clifton and a friend come in for his art delivery day. This was his first time showing at Art at the Mill.

In theatre, they say "Break a Leg" to wish the actors good luck before a show. Is there an art show saying to wish your fellow artists good fortune for art sales? There should be something...like "May your art fall off the wall" or "Break a canvas". Anyone know of one?

Three Fox Vineyard

The day also included a nice stop at the Three Fox Vineyard & Brewery at 10100 Three Fox Lane, Delaplane, VA - well because, its on the way, AND our fellow artist friend Bettie Sperty has art on display there, AND it was lunch time (great pizza!), AND well, its a WINERY!

We watched at little kids rolled down the hill, as it steadily got busier and busier with folks and their dogs came to enjoy the day.

A good day! There are actually several wineries on the way to Art at the Mill so its a very nice day trip to go out, see some art, stop and have some wine and munchies, so grab a friend and plan a trip out to Milwood!

Post 369: Artist Reception at the 74th Fredericksburg Show

Artist Reception at the 74th Annual Fredericksburg Fine Arts Show and Sale

One of the earliest shows of the year in the Virginia 1-95 Northern Virginia corridor that I've taken a part in is a very nice art show in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This is the second year I've joined this show.

The 74th Annual Fredericksburg Fine Arts Show and Sale is Friday, March 14 - Sunday, March 16, at the Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal Street, Fredericksburg, VA. Lots of great art, lots of local to you Virginia artists, lots to see!

Wall to Wall, There's Art

Art media covers the gauntlet - oil, watercolor, acrylic, drawing, photography, 3-D sculpture, mixed media and misc too.

Art Drop off was on Monday, March 10 for Sandra McClelland Lewin and I. I know several other Prince William Art Society members were also in the show including Staci Blanchard (The Goddess of Glitter), Maria Briganti, Cassandra and Terry Sandin - whom we saw at the Art Reception.

The Artist Reception was on Thursday, March 13, 2025 6-8pm

What we really like about this show is that the artworks are displayed by Medium. A row front and back of Oil Paintings, a row of Acrylic Paintings, a row of Watercolors, Mixed Media, Drawings and so forth. The ribbons are awarded per medium.

I was totally fascinated with the Encaustic artwork in the Mixed Media row. These had to be seen in person to get the full gist of the beauty in them.

Lo and behold, the person that won Best in Show, Catherine Hillis, is the person PWAS had just onboarded as our juror for the upcoming "Best of the Region Fine Art Show and Sale" in the upcoming show scheduled for June 3-15 at the ARTfactory in Manassas, VA. The Call for Art for that show will be April 1-30, 2025. Her two art pieces are above and below.

This one called "Swan Lake" won a couple of ribbons, one of them being the "People's Choice" - it was gorgeous!

Proceeds from the show benefit the Women’s Club of Fredericksburg charitable programs and Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events programs.

Their preference is to have the prices of the artwork be affordable so they can be sure to raise funds...some of the artworks on display were pricey though. Artists CAN ask for what they want for a piece, absolutely...but...

Well anyway, the Show Dates were:

Friday, March 14, 2025, 10am–8pm

Saturday, March 15, 2025, 10am–6pm

Sunday, March 16, 2025, 10am–4pm

I missed getting a picture of the black panther someone did as soon as you enter the show floor located in the Oil Painting row. That was outstanding.

Look for this annual art show at the Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal Street in Fredericksburg, VA. The entry process is not juried, they have a top number of entries that once met, the entries stop.

Post 354: An Art Reception at the Art Factory for Bettie and Sandra

An Art Reception at the Art Factory for Bettie and Sandra

On Saturday, August 10, 2024 at the ARTFactory in Manassas, 2 friends of mine from the Prince William Art Society were having an art reception for their show called "Earthly Delights". Sandra McClelland Lewin and Bettie Sperty have their show up until September 15th.

Earthly Delights Art Show

On Saturday, August 10, 2024 I made the trip down the Parkway to Manassas for Sandra and Bettie's art reception. I LOVED the butterfly background for pictures! What a fun idea. I saw plenty of people getting their pictures taken with the wings.

L to R: Sandra and Bettie
Of course, they had to get one of me...

A few pictures from around the gallery. It was wonderful to see a gallery full of artwork by Bettie and Sandra. Their styles are very different but always wonderful. And it was good to see so many Prince William Art Society members, both current and former members, and friends from Manassas too.
And Otis Stanley was there too!

Congratulations Bettie and Sandra for a wonderful art show!

The ARTFactory is located at 9419 Battle Street, Manassas, VA and has a rich history in the area. And I painted it one time too! It's located across from the train station and the parking garage. Stop in and see Bettie and Sandra's show!

Post 322: Fall Art at the Mill Art Show - A Nice Drive to Millwood

Fall Art at the Mill Art Show - A Nice Drive to Millwood

Over the river and through the woods, to Millwood, Virginia we go! Sandra McClelland Lewin and I made the one hour and 16+ drive out to the far lands of western Virginia out to the rolling hills - with plenty of wineries and horses to Burwell-Morgan Mill. Our goal: to drop off our art at the mill.

What is Art at the Mill?

Art at the Mill is held at Burwell-Morgan Mill located in Millwood, Virginia in Clark County. The name of the art show is "Art at the Mill" held twice a year as a spring and fall art show with approximately 300 artists and about 1000 pieces of art. AMAZING!

https://www.clarkehistory.org/art-mill.html

Sandra and I from the Prince William Art Society (but representing ourselves) were both selected to show at the Mill. Artists pay a small entry fee and can submit up to 5 pieces - we each had 3 pieces chosen.

The check in process is like a well-running milestone...

And it is, a live mill, water running through it and various types of flour are ground there. It is very cool and the sound of the water strikes you as soon as you enter the doors. Then up the stairs we go...

For those artists selected to appear, they pre-schedule their drop off appointments to help with not only dispersing the volume of people descending on the mill all at once and check in process, but to alleviate the parking in and out. Our drop off time was Friday, September 1 at 1 pm, so not a lot of art has been dropped off as yet - some art is whisked away to store in the upper levels, while some is hung on the walls.

That is not where it will stay though. The drop-off is a 3 day event - Friday through Sunday. After all the artwork arrives, the busy Millunteers will "hang" the space. Every nook and every cranny will be art-filled making this art show a delight to the eyes. If you LOVE art, creative people, and love supporting the artists - and the mill, come by and see, well, both. The mill and the art!

One of my paintings, "Saltwater Aquarium" in its temporary spot by a Millunteer.

Sandra at the the check-in tables. The Art at the Mill staff have a great, efficient method of checking in the volume of artists in the show - and it makes sense. First is to give your name at one table, the volunteer checks you in on their computers and gives you your pre-printed check-in labels. Next, another check-in point, where you verify the artwork and labels, then finally you hand your art over. The volunteer adheres the labels to the back of the artwork and other Millunteers whisk off the art to make way for the next wave of art and artists.

Quite noticeably, there is not a lot of artwork checked in as yet. I suppose the downside of getting there early on a Friday, is not being able to see what else has come in as yet. But early has its advantages too - a quick snack across the street was a nice break in the day too, especially on such a beautiful day.

Well the next important dates are the actual show times.

ART SHOW HOURS
Art at the Mill will be open 7 days a week
Saturday SEPT 23 through Sunday, OCT 8, 2023 during the following hours:
Sundays through Fridays 12-5 pm
Saturdays 10 am-5 pm

The art reception will be on Sunday, October 1 from 2-5pm.

And another great thing about Art at the Mill is that close to the show opening, their Facebook and website will post a live link to ALL of the art that is on display. People can purchase art - but the Mill does not ship it to them. Artists can watch the progress and see if their own artwork has sold. Such an efficient and marvelous process!

Along with my Saltwater Aquarium painting, these are the other two pieces of mine that were selected:

"No One Can Teach Riding So Well As A Horse" Acrylic on Stretched Canvas 18x24

"Streams Never Stay the Same" Acrylic on Stretched Canvas 11x14

Hopefully we have less or NO art to pick-up when the show ends - wish us luck!

ART PICK-UP:
Friday, Oct 13 OR Saturday, Oct 14, OR Sunday, Oct 15
