Post 228: Pink Parasol - 16x20 Acrylic on Canvas

Painting Name: Pink Parasol

A lazy day on a pond with a lady holding a pink parasol and a fellow rowing the boat. If you look closely, the swan has a few babies swimming about too. How many baby swans do you see?

Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: Yes
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?

A challenge for myself to TRY to paint people.

See the Painting in progress at

The painting in progress post is at https://donnascavepainting.blogspot.com/2021/12/post-219-pink-parasol.html - and this one was a serious case of "in progress". I painted over her face at least 3 times.

What do you think? Or should I call it aliens in a rowboat?

Post 227: East Coast Beach Sunrise

Painting Name: East Coast Beach Sunrise

A beach sunrise from here on the East Coast - North Carolina is where the original photo was taken. Big orange and pink sky chasing the night sky away. It sure makes a dreary day feel better!

SKU: 12GF21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 20x20 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Price: $700
Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: No
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?

I don't usually sit on a painting for very long - wait, that doesn't sound right. That would stretch a canvas rather horribly. I mean that usually I paint and post it then move along. This one has been waiting to get varnished...then waiting to get wired...then waiting to get its picture taken.

Actually, I should have thrown in that I did adjust the shadow on the bird too. See if you can tell from the other photo.

But I HAD to get him done - its an end of year thing you know. So here he his, let me know what you think.

See the Painting in progress at

I started this one earlier in December 2021, so check out the original post at:

Here is the other post too. Hmm...2 in progress posts.

Post 225: Mr. Sloth 10x10 Acrylic on Canvas

Painting Name: Mr. Sloth

I have a friend and neighbor that has had me paint 3 paintings for her this year and she purchased one already painted, God Bless her! Painting a sloth was something that would never have occurred to me to do, but she has another friend in another state whom she is visiting soon that just LOVES sloths. Therefore, a sloth painting is on.

SKU: 12GY21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 10x10 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Price: SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: No
Commissioned? Yes

What Brought About this Painting?

Painting a sloth was something that would never occurred to me as they just are not all that "pretty". Of course, all of God's creatures serve their purpose, even spiders and sharks - and I have painted a shark. (I don't think I will EVER paint a spider unless somehow its a teenie tiny spot on a web somewhere.) The sloths running the DMV in the Zootopia movie were kinda cute and casting them at the DMV was SOOO appropriate.

As my neighbor's friend loves sloths, she asked me to paint one for her. So here is Mr. Sloth.

Here is Mr Sloth in progress photos:

Post 222: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas and a Creative and Happy New Year!

2021 is drawing to a close.

Reflecting on 2021 after the sadness and madness of 2020, it has been an interesting year indeed.

I have painted A LOT. To date, I have painted 207 paintings just this year. Granted, about 89 of those were mini paintings, a few magnets, etc. The art inventory is getting better - I knew I needed to build it up in 2020.

I have joined the Prince William Art Society (PWAS), the Manassas Art Guild (MAG), and the Prince William County Arts Council (PWCAC). I've been meeting a lot of great people in these art groups as well as the talented ladies at Creative Brush Studio in Manassas, VA and the good folks over at Clearbrook Center of the Arts. Such interesting, fascinating and awesomely talented people in Woodbridge! It has been a pleasure getting to know all of them.

I have taken part in my first art show in May and done several more and had some success this year. Learning more about the "business" of art - and all that entails.

I have my own website at https://donnaliguriaart.com and I manage the PWAS Blog https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/

I am working some at Lake Ridge Middle School - can't complain about that 5 minute commute and the school hours! So very odd to be taking algebra again. I realized very quickly, I do not miss it.

I'm very grateful for all my friends, the 'old' and the new, my Burke Community Church Lake Ridge Life Group friends and my neighbors.

I'm very thankful for all those that have supported my art and cheered me on. I appreciate my family most of all, the ones that love me no matter what. 💓

For all the craziness of the past year, I am reminded that God is still in control, He always has been and will be. My hope is in the babe He sent so many years ago and why we celebrate His birth at Christmas. He was born for us, in spite of us, and loves us more than anyone.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Creative New Year. He RULES!

Travel safe, hug your loved ones, and make something GREAT.

Post 180: The Day That Brought This Baby Into the World

The Day That Brought This Baby Into the World

It is always a bit strange to hear the story of the day you were born, and funny too.

Birthday Ice Cream at Trattoria Villagio in Clifton, Virginia

My mother was just reminding me...

My Dad was away at Fort Lejeune when my Mom went into labor with me. My parents lived in Northern Virginia at the time near my Grandmother. My older brother, by almost 11 months was almost a year old so my Aunt Sonnie had to come over to watch him while my Grandma and Mom took a taxi to the hospital near by.

My Grandma was shushing my mother to not make any noise...like that can happen with someone so far along into labor with their second child.

My Mom was struggling to keep the noise level down but was barely holding on.

I told my Mother that she really missed her opportunity to grab my G-Ma by the lapels and scream at her something along the lines of, "YOU NEVER TOLD ME WHAT CAUSED ALL THIS!"

Hospital arrival and they quickly got my Mom up to her room.

My Grandma had some errands to run and left.

The Doctor said this baby is about to be born.

Few minutes later, I arrived and there was no one there to share the news with so the Doctor had my mom call a lady in his office to tell her, "It's a GIRL!"

After awhile my Grandmother came back and was, I presume, semi-chastised by the nurses that she missed the whole thing. My Mother and I were just discussing that as many children as my Grandma had, she should have realized that second babies aren't waiting around. Oh well. (I love my G-Ma but she was really a tough bird.)

I know someone did contact my Dad and I'll have to give an update on when they let him out, but he did arrive at some point. That long ago they kept you in the hospital a lot longer than they do now.

So, this is the short story of my arrival and for 1 month and a few days, my older brother and I are the same age. It has always struck me as very funny - I catch up with him every year and then he passes me. I really don't mind at all, he can hit and take the lead on the big numbers ahead of me any time.

Post 179: Underwater Coral Floral, 16x20 Acrylic on Canvas In Progress

Painting Name: Underwater Coral Floral

Under the water, under the sea, the coral and fish live in harmony...until someone gets hungry.

SKU: 08CX21ACL2
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Price: $Pending
Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: No
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?

Oh no, now I have the Sponge Bob theme stuck in my head...THAT has got to stop!

The beauty of the Earth is quite extraordinary, and in the ocean, maybe even more so. This work is still in progress as shown below. Our creator is pretty creative isn't He?

Underwater sea life of coral and the some of the fish that live around it including a sea turtle.

Painting in Progress Images…

Monday, August 9, 2021 9:27AM Still working on this painting, the coral isn't quite where I want it and I feel like it can use some other sea creatures in it. Any ideas? A sea turtle, a dolphin, a shark?
Side note: that's a bit of sunshine showing in the right top corner from the window.

Monday, August 9, 2021 11:14 AM A few new fish swam in.

And the Finished Painting

Wednesday, August 11, 2021 9:29 AM I do believe I am done with this underwater painting. I know the traffic can be very busy around the coral reefs of the world. Commuting can be very congested, but I am more fond of a painting not being too overly busy.

So the painting is now at the drying stage and then the varnishing on its way to "curing".

Post 176: The Busy Bee Series of Paintings

The Busy Bee Series of Paintings

I recently painted a series of paintings I am calling "The Busy Bee Series". These are (at least so far) mostly bumble bees, but I do have a honey bee flying through the canvases.

What brought about the Busy Bee Series?

This little painting started the breathtaking business of busy bees (say that 3 times fast to ward off being stung). I recently sold this painting at Clearbrook Center of the Arts through my PWAS group (go me!) so of course, I needed more bee paintings, right?

Buzz the Bee, 4x5 Acrylic on Canvas by Donna Liguria

Busy Bee Series, the List

  1. Buzz the Bee, 4x5
  2. A Bumble Bee's Butt, 4x4
  3. Buzz the Bee 2, 4x4
  4. Honey Bee at Work, 4x4
  5. Bee Flower Feast, 4x4
  6. I Was Here First, 4x4
  7. Bee Butt Over Flowers, 4x4
Click on the link to go to the Bee Story for each one. Which one do you like best?

What makes a Paint Series?

For me, a paint series will probably consist of the same subject, painted one after the other, typically on the same size canvas. That would be a more true series than a lot of variations in canvas size.

For instance, in June and July I painted 4 different Blue Heron paintings. I sold the first one, tried to sell the second one but got a commission for a larger one and someone asked for a smaller one. I may end up calling that a series but the size of canvases were 2 at 10 by 20 inch, 1 at 15 by 30 inch and 1 at 5 by 7. The Busy Bee Series were all intentionally painted as a series and mostly of the same size or close to it.

Anyway, its a little thing. A painting is a painting, is a painting.

Post 175: Cactus Series 3: Lonely in the Desert, 4x12 Acrylic on Canvas

Painting Name: Lonely in the Desert

Cactus Series is a group of three 4x12 inch canvases with different cactus scenes. "Lonely in the Desert" is a single tall cactus braving the heat.

SKU: 08CW21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 4x12 Stretched Canvas
Price: SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Series: Cactus Series
Framed?: No

What Brought About this Painting?

For me, I am thinking at least 3 is a series of the same subject, probably of the same size. Two are just "I painted 2 of these" and three is a theme going. Makes sense to me at least.

Shown below are all three paintings of the Cactus Series, in order of:

  1. A Prickly Painting 4x12 acrylic (left)
  2. Cacti Patch 4 x 12 acrylic (middle)
  3. Lonely in the Desert 4 x 12 acrylic (right)
