Post 248: Rose Garden Walk 20x20 Acrylic Gallery Wrapped Canvas

What Brought About this Painting?

It has crossed my mind occasionally that when you are painting flowers, there should be a type of paint that gives off the aroma of that particular flower - wouldn't that be awesome? Imagine walking by a wonderful growth of honeysuckle, or a batch of paperwhites, or lavender, or some very fragrant roses...

Post 226: 100 Mini Paintings this Year and Counting

100 Mini Paintings this Year and Counting

A box of 100 3x4 Canvases arrived at my house about mid-year with the thought of Christmas gifts dancing in my head. Whether for sale or given as gifts myself, that was the thought. Here it is December 28, 2021 and I am on mini canvas 99 and 100 looking at me blankly. UPDATE: I added #99 and #100 at the end.

I've sold a fair amount of them, I've given away some too - especially this just passed Christmas. They may be small, but they be mighty (occasionally).

I've painted rabbits, flowers, mini landscapes, birds, cats, waterfalls, poinsettias, snowmen, dogwood trees, giraffes, hamsters, hedgehogs, sailboats, dandelions, bees, roosters, goldfish and koi fish. And flip flops, bird eggs, lighthouses and American Flags.

Some are painted to replace others that are gone. It seems that every time I paint a peacock, a sea turtle, a hobbit house - they disappear, thankfully. But I feel the need to replace them!

I read not long ago that paintings are little pieces of the artist that painted them, so when sold or given away, the recipient has a piece of that artist. No matter the length of time spent on creating that piece, the artist gives of him or herself into that artwork. It is wonderful to be able to share what I create with another person and have them enjoy it.

And wouldn't you know, in early December, another box of 100 3x4 Canvases arrived at my house, ready to be opened. Little pieces of me...

The Hedgehog, the Flag, the gray upside down Cat and one of the Black Cats are gone. The larger paintings, "Pink Parasol" and "East Coast Beach Sunrise" are both waiting on the wiring and their blog posts are coming soon.

Post 186: Stop and Smell the Roses 8x3 Acrylic on Canvas

What Brought About this Painting?

My similar painting recently sold, which was great. Interestingly, it had the most views of any of my paintings, especially on Etsy, but I actually sold it at Clearbrook Center of the Arts, in Lake Ridge, VA at Tackett's Mill. This one will be 8x8, where the previous version as 6x6.

Post 120: White Fenced Garden, 6x6 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: White Fenced Garden

Life began in a garden. It is good to remember that.

SKU: 05BM21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Price: SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

What Brought About this Painting?
A design element in a garden is to make you wonder what you will see in your next step, or around the corner, or if you take one path as opposed to another, or what is beyond that gate, walkway, or fence.

A painting can take a piece of that element too, I believe - what is on the other side of the fence or at the end of the walk way? If the painting was continued, what would I see? A sort of - If the story carried on, what happens to the characters? That is my thinking on this...I want to see what the rest of the garden looks like.

Post 114: Stargazer Lily, 6 by 6 Acrylic Mini Canvas

Painting Name: Stargazer Lily

I rather like a looking at a lily, and it looking back at me.

SKU: 05BJ21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Stretched Canvas
Price: $45.00 + Shipping
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?
Stargazer is a favorite Lily of course!

From Wikipedia:
"Lilium 'Stargazer' (the 'Stargazer lily') is a hybrid lily of the 'Oriental group'. Oriental lilies are known for their fragrant perfume, blooming mid-to-late summer. Stargazers are easy to grow and do best in full sunlight. They have a fast growth rate and should be planted in full sun in well-drained loamy or sandy soil. When mature, 'Stargazers' can grow to a height of 36 inches with a spread of 10 to 14 inches with 2 to 8 flowers per stem."

I have a few planted in the front yard. I remember the first year I planted them...saw the buds grow, the lilies were just starting to open and the next day, they weren't there any more. I'm pretty sure a deer walked by and mistook them for dessert on a stick. But since then, they have bloomed every year and are always a treat to look at (not eat).

"Lily Symbolism & Colors
Lilies commonly grow in white, yellow, pink, red, and orange.
  • White lilies symbolize purity and virtue.
  • Pink (stargazer) lilies symbolize prosperity and abundance.
  • Red lilies symbolize passion.
  • Orange (tiger) lilies symbolize confidence, pride, and wealth.
  • Yellow lilies symbolize thankfulness and desire for enjoyment."
This is good. I have a lot of those colors!

Post 79: Mercury Glass Flower Arrangement Still Life 16x20 Acrylic

Painting Name: Mercury Glass Flower Arrangement

I like this painting. I picture it in a living room with grays and blues and neutral colors.

SKU: 02AJ21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Price: $278.00 plus shipping
Framed?: No (but may update this)
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?
I painted a similar background for a floral painting a couple of weeks ago but wanted to do something different this go around. This flower arrangement still life centers with the mercury glass vase which is highlighted with silver and iridescent paint.

The flower arrangement has sort of a beige - pink, champagne roses, blue and purple hydrangeas, and some white lilies.

This painting was finished with a matte varnish - meaning there is not a "shiny" look to the canvas other than the metallic silver and iridescent paint used on the vase area.

Post 77: Hydrangeas Over a Rock Wall 16x20 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: Hydrangeas Over a Rock Wall

SKU: 02AI21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Price: $175.00 plus Shipping
Framed?: No
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?
I like painting flowers and I like painting rock walls. Together, they seem like a spot in the garden to sit and stare at for awhile. What is so very cool about Hydrangea bushes is that you can adjust the color by adjusting the pH of the soil from blue to pink. To me, that makes for a pretty cool planting.

Post 76: A Painting in Progress: Hydrangeas Over a Rock Wall

A Painting In Progress: Hydrangeas over a Rock Wall

I thought all hydrangeas could change color depending on the amount of aluminum in the soil, but apparently they do not all do that.

What would you like to see painted next? Any suggestions? Leave your comments!

Gosh, who wouldn't like a flowering bush that you may be able to control which color you get?

Started this one on Monday, Feb 22, 2021 and here is where I am at 12:30 pm on Feb 24, 2021 so far. The problem with painting hydrangeas is that it is NOT a single flower but a gazillion blooms concentrated in a bundle of them all over a hydrangea bush. Back to the canvas....

Post 71: A Pot of Purple Pansies 8x10 Acrylic

Painting Name: A Pot of Purple Pansies

There are so many types and colors of pansies, I don't see where I could possibly not paint more.

SKU: 02Z21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 8x10 Stretched Canvas
Framed?: No
Edition Year: 2021
Prints Available Upon Request or on Etsy

About this Painting…

Pansy, or pansies, the dictionary describes as, "a popular cultivated viola with flowers in rich colors, with both summer- and winter-flowering varieties."

I have always liked these little flowers and their colors are quite extensive, but the first pansy colors I am painting is a purple - blue pansy with some white, yellow and a touch of orange in its center in a terracotta pot on a light green background.

A Painting in Progress: A Pot of Purple Pansies

Doesn't everyone have a favorite flower? Actually, most would say these are my top ten flowers probably because there are just so many flowers that we love that it is hard to name a single one, I believe. What would you name in your top ten, or do you have a single favorite? Leave your comments, below!

Pansies are just ONE of mine. Remember in the movie, "You've Got Mail" when Meg Ryan's character is talking about her favorite flower?

Kathleen Kelly:
I love daisies.

Joe Fox:
You told me.

Kathleen Kelly:
They're so friendly. Don't you think they are the friendliest flower?

For me, not so much on the daisy...
Pansies just make me smile and know that spring is here. So many awesome colors and such delicacy. They can be fancy and frilly, but they don't have to be. They can be dressed in solid colors or wear a mixture. Kind of a tough little flower too.

So as always, a painting must start with a background

These pansies decided to be purple so far, with some white, and I think some yellow is coming.

Post 65: Orchid in a Terracotta Pot 11x14 Acrylic Painting on Canvas

Painting Name: Orchid in a Terracotta Pot

Backgrounds will be an ongoing study for me in future paintings for still life.

SKU: 02W21ACG
Medium:  Acrylic
Size:  11x14 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Framed?: No
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

About this Painting…

This is a Gallery Wrap stretched canvas turned vertically so the 14 inch side is up and the 11 side is horizontal. The orchids are white, pale green, tinges of peach, and pale blues and a bit of soft orange. The leaves are a deep green. The background is beige, blue, brown and white.

I have to confess, I have never grown orchids, have you? They always seemed so intimidating to my somewhat green thumb (oh, it was a paint smudge, sorry). But I did learn a few things and this link certainly breaks through the rumors and myths so if I can find the right placement for one, maybe I will try to grow one.

In the meantime, I may keep this one hanging up for awhile.
