Post 331: The Dove at the Jordan

Painting Name: The Dove at the Jordan

I hope you know the story on this one.

SKU: 10EK23AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 11x14x.75 Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2023
Framed?: No

What Brought About this Painting?

I've watched "The Chosen" several times now. If you haven't, I highly suggest you do. Season 4 is supposed to come out in theaters in 2024 so you have Season 1 through 3 to binge on til then through the Angel Studios app on your TV. And this December, Dallas Jenkins (son of Jerry Jenkins, one of the writers of the Left Behind Series) has worked on combining "The Shepard" and "The Messengers" for a Christmas special.

I did touch up the faces some and tweaked here and there after taking the picture above. Getting the varnishing done now. Debated on the name of the painting as well (artists...we are always piddling, you know). "The Dove at the Jordan" or "The Lamb and the Dove at the Jordan"?

The art label making folks LOVE shorter names for paintings and I understand that. When they are making those small labels, it is far easier to make and see a shorter name. Also, if the name is going into an online art store, limited characters in that line may cut something off. Oh the challenges.

I've painted a few Christian-based paintings and here is another one to add to my list. Previously, I have these:

A mini acrylic painting 3x4 called "Genesis 1:1" on mini canvas with a mini easel. I hope you know the words..."In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth." I am a believer of this - my hope is that you do too.

"Genesis to Revelations, He's Got This" is 16x20 Acrylic on Canvas and is Sold. When you read about the crucifixion of Christ on the Cross, it is often said that the nails were probably actually in His wrists. The weight of His body would have torn His hands if the nails were driven through His palms.

16x20 Acrylic on Canvas "There Once Was a Boat". I based this on the Ark Experience style of Ark. The animals were INSIDE the ark and I'm pretty sure the giraffe's heads were not sticking out of the top window nor were the monkeys dangling off the railings or the elephants standing on the deck with their trunks in the air. Imagine what it would have been like to be Noah and his family in a world covered with water for months on end. And knowing you were the only people left on earth...

3 Mini 3x4 "Holy Bible" paintings in acrylic on mini canvases with mini easels. Holy Bible script is in gold leaf, 1 is Sold

"The Day the World Changed" is 4x5 small painting in acrylic. Everything changed on this day. What can we say about a God that loved us so much that He would die for us, and was actually killed by us? The foremost thing is that He became like us, hence the body CAN be killed, but we cannot actually kill God. He rose from the dead - He is a living God. That is how HE - saved - us.
HE paid OUR price.

Post 161: A Painting in Progress: Genesis to Revelations - He's Got This

What Brought About this Painting?

I am SURE I am not the only artist that wakes up with a painting in their mind, that must be put on canvas. This morning, I saw the Earth in God's hands - or more specifically, in Christ's hands as a message to the world.

"He's got the whole world in His hands" is an old song that came to mind but also reading Romans 2 about Gods tolerance, patience, and His kindness with us humans - wanting us to turn to Him.

Romans 1:20 "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."

In other words, and adding the previous verses to this - people try to cancel God, (cancel the truth of God). Although God is invisible, we see the truths of a Creator with huge eternal, inexhaustible power and divinity, intricately making every single animal, molecule, mountain and person. His designs are fantastic and creative.

No big bangs nor evolution created all this. We all inherit at birth, an internal sense of right and wrong although we easily choose to do what we know to be wrong especially if it serves our own interests at VERY early ages.

We are living in the time of Grace after Christ was born, lived, died and rose again then ascended to Heaven. He is going to return. We do not know the hour, day, year of His return, but He IS coming back.

Post 74: There Once Was A Boat 16x20 Acrylic

Painting Name: There Once Was a Boat

Can you imagine what Noah and his family were thinking as they spent all that time floating around, caring for all the animals with them?

SKU: 02AC21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Framed?: Yes, a simple antique gold floating frame
Edition Year: 2021

What Brought About this Painting?
Well one morning I woke up with the thought to paint Noah's Ark floating out on the water. I didn't want the "bathtub kiddie ark" that you often see depicted and I did not want the stormy skies Ark on the angry water. Another thing I didn't think was too realistic was a bunch of the animals on the top deck looking out over the water. It just didn't seem that Noah would have allowed that or that it was plausible (Noah and family would have had to clean the decks), nor would the Ark have been built that way.

So, as I usually do, I did some research first to get an idea on what the Ark should look like without too much "artistic license". In my internet travels, what could be more interesting than some of the videos about Mount Ararat in Turkey and if they have found the ark? And of special interest to me is the Ark Encounter in Kentucky which led me to this video that I found absolutely fascinating...

Noah’s Ark and the Flood with Dr. Georgia Purdom

This is an hour long video and well worth the viewing and tackles the following:

"Was Noah’s Flood global? How big was the Ark? How did Noah fit all the animals on the Ark? Is there any evidence in rock layers and fossils for the Flood? This presentation will equip you with biblical and scientific answers that show that the Genesis account of the Ark and Flood are true history." A very cool video.

In Genesis, we are told some basics on what the ark looked like along with the size and we know it did not have sails. God steered the Ark where He wanted it. We know it was made of gopher wood and sealed in pitch inside and out. So what color did that make it?

Genesis 6 to 9 tells the story of Noah and about the Ark.

The Size: is figured to be 510 feet long (from the cubit measurements).

The Color: was probably black, maybe dark gray.

The Wood: Unknown tree today, but it was covered with pitch anyway.

Side Note: I would like to go and see the Ark Encounter someday. There are a lot of videos about the exhibits to check out so have a look at the Ark Encounter https://arkencounter.com/

I found this video too, its a good one. Fascinating!

The Ark had several levels and it had one window and one door. Think on that one a moment: One way to be saved and once the door is shut, no one else can enter.

How long did it take for Noah to build the Ark? It is estimated that it took 55 to 75 years for Noah to build the Ark, which also allows time for the people to hear about what was coming. (And that means the pitch would be baked by the sun for quite awhile too.)

We know that God caused wind to help dry the flood waters, which follows that the sea was probably fairly wavy to some degree as well and the sun would have helped evaporate water too.

So the painting started and this is where I ended up...

Often I will look at a painting for a day or so before deciding if it needs anything else. I saw a painting of the Ark with a whale tail but that seems gratuitous, as well as a dove. I would imagine Noah and family had quite a long time of floating about before Noah started letting the dove do a test flight.

I also considered the top of Mount Ararat appearing from under the flood waters off in the distance which is the resting place the Bible says where the Ark is. Genesis 8: 4 "Then the Ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat."

Let me know what you think.

Post 73: A Painting In Progress: There Once Was a Boat

Painting Name: There Once Was A Boat

I just didn't want the same old "Noah's Ark" painting with the unrealistic heads of the giraffes poking their heads out and elephant trunks hanging over the edge. Wouldn't the balance of the Ark have been off kilter?

SKU: 02AC21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Price: $Pending
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

Painting in Progress Images…

As per many paintings of boats, they need to start with the sky and water in the background. I'm wondering how quickly someone can name the picture as it develops? From picture 1, or 2, or 3, 4 or 5? Leave your comments!

Image 1: Painting background started

Image 2: Drew in the preliminary shape of the boat and painted in some darker water

Image 3: Started to fill in some boat area

Image 4: Continue laying in basic boat area

Image 5: As they say, it's all in the details. And more details and more details...

Did you figure out what boat it is yet?
