Lookout for Cape Lookout Lighthouses

In preparation of the Harkers Island Fire Department Vendor Show on Saturday, November 6, 2025 at 1219 Island Rd, Harkers Island, NC 28531, my easel has seen a flurry of Bookcase and Small Art featuring the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. The 4x12 painting features the Blue Angels doing a fly by the lighthouse.

Post 406: Blood Orange

Painting Name: Blood Orange

Every once in a while an artist has to go and do something not in their usual style or type of artwork. Perhaps to just try it out and explore an idea in their heads, perhaps to try to enter into a challenging art show they may not necessarily apply to.

SKU: 08W25ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 10x10x1.5 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025

What Brought About this Painting?

I am NOT a fan of haunted, horror, scary, halloween themes and movies. Nope. Not a fan of spiders, creepy creatures, ghosts or goblins. The Walking Dead, The Thing, anything with witches, jump out and grab you movies, I avoid like the plague. Yet, I'm hoping to enter an upcoming art show with perhaps, some "slightly" darker themes. Here is one of the artworks I hope to enter with a few of the painting as it progresses...

This is not the final of the painting, but its close...Let's see if I can get this in the show. Wish me luck!

Post 404: Top of the Morning to You

Painting Name: Top of the Morning to You

I'm very much enjoying this summer's morning glories in my backyard. I hope my neighbor is too because they have definitely gone over the fence to say hello to them too. I love the colors, they are fun to paint and capture on canvas so that they can be enjoyed all year!

What Brought About this Painting?

A painting by Donna Liguria of morning glories growing and twinning up a fence. The flowers are in various colors of pink, white, lilac, purple, magenta, and blue.

The painting isn't quite done yet but he's getting pretty close. I have several artworks in my studio at the moment in Tweak-mode. So I should be having a glorious varnishing day soon. Are you a fan of morning glories too? What flowers do you like?

Post 394: In the Works - More Morning Glory Flowers!

In the Works - More Morning Glory Flowers!

I'm on a bit of a morning glory kick at the moment as my mini garden blooms this summer. Absolutely, I am loving the summer's gifts of fresh tomatoes and basil, but the daily changes in the whites, pinks, purples, blues, and lavenders in the morning glory flowers get my attention too.

"Oh, what a beautiful morning! Oh, what a beautiful day!*..." At least I don't come out of the house each morning singing at the top of my lungs, much to the appreciation of my neighbors. (Yes, guilty of watching so many musicals, growing up where everyone breaks out in a song.)

These morning glories love the sunrise! Then they get shy once the morning starts aging, falling in upon themselves.  But wait, more will open tomorrow.
Here is what I have painted thus far this summer.

Painting Name: Garden Flower Glories

More practice in the use of the watercolor pencils than anything, I enjoy using these little watercolor treasures since using them in Valerie Larson's class. Basically its a "Draw it and drown it" style with watercolor pencils - I'm loving it.

Medium: Watercolor Pencils and Acrylic Pens
Size: 9x12 Mixed Media Paper
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

Painting Name: The Morning Glory Climb

This one will have morning glories, they are coming. I promise. I planted the seeds! I played with watercolor markers to see what it would do...not a fan as yet. My yard is tiny living here in Woodbridge, VA. That's fine. Town houses often have tiny yards but I am determined to grow a few things other than weeds.

Even more practice with watercolor pencils and mixed media paper. This might be in preparation for the next one.

Medium: Watercolor Pencils and Acrylic Pens (so far)
Size: 9x12 Mixed Media Paper
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

Updated July 25, 2025 7:39am. See, I said I planted those seeds!

Painting Name: no name so far

Acrylic paintings start off so sadly. Their beginnings are not much to celebrate. His destiny may be more morning glories. That's the plan.

Medium: Acrylic
Size: 12x20 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

Morning Glory Inspiration

Here are some snapshots of my morning inspiration...ok, maybe I am singing a more muted "Oh, what a beautiful morning..." in the backyard in the am, but my neighbors are not usually out that early. The plants don't mind.

Uh oh, something is chewing on my morning glories! Perhaps they like them better than the vegetables though. Choose your battles.

The first of the Morning Glory paintings I've started and he is 4x12 on canvas in acrylics

I didn't realize at the time I had captured this fellow's mug shot.

I may update the paintings as I get them finished up so check back!

Post 389: Feather Series

Painting Series: Feathers

I'm sure we've all done it at some point in our lives. You are outside for a walk and come across a feather that some bird lost. Some are obvious which bird they came from while some other feathers may not be as recognizable from their source unless you are an ornithologist.

The beauty of even the "plainest" of feathers, and their intricacies and variations are innumerable as even one species of bird has multiple differences in their feathers between the male and female and where on their bodies the feather came from.

This series on feathers is a simple look at some of my favorite bird's plumages.

Post 388: Morning Glory

Painting Name: Morning Glory

New Artwork by Donna Liguria

If you have a garden and you are an artist...there is simply not enough time in the day to create all the artwork that could be made from the beauty just outside your front and/or back door. The morning glories in my yard, just blooming away, announced a painting in waiting.

SKU: 07U25ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 4x12x1.5 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No

What's the Story? What Brought About this Painting?

My backyard! I planted some morning glories last year and some volunteers arose this year along with some new seeds planted. The colors BEGGED to be painted and I hope to actually paint more than one. Here is a photo of the artwork I started yesterday. It's getting close to being finished...a few tweaks to go!

Morning Glory in progress

That blue - purple - pink in the one variety just got me - such intense color! I'll get another picture in when I have him closer to finished.

A few reference photos from this morning...

Something is chomping on the leaves buy I figure I would rather have them eating the morning glory leaves than my vegetable! Any gardeners out there with some advice?

Post 378: Washington DC Seasons Series - A Capital Summer

Painting Name: A Capital Summer

What says summer in Washington DC better than fireworks? This painting is the fourth in my Washington DC Seasons Series that features the US Capital from the Eastern side with a back drop of Fourth of July fireworks, celebrating Independence Day.

SKU: 05R25ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 12x16x1.5 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No
Commissioned? Yes
SOLD

What Brought About this Painting?

This is the fourth in a series of paintings of various Washington DC locations in all four seasons featuring 4 different spots in the Nation's Capital. I'm not sure we knew that the first commission would grow as it has, but the first request came from a visitor to the Open Space Arts gallery that the Prince William Art Society once staffed for our members and artists living all around Prince William County. This newfound friend in Alexandria, VA loved a painting I did of the spring cherry blossoms in DC that featured the Washington Monument, but he wanted a different size than the previous work.

The first in the series was "Cherry Blossoms an Annual DC Event"

I was contacted by my friend again, with the request for Washington DC in the winter, thus the next season was born.

The second was "White House Having a White Christmas"

The third of the series was "Lincoln Memorial in the Fall"

Each of the Washington DC Series is 12x16x1.5 and is created with Acrylics and Acrylic Pens. Those acrylic fine point pens are great for getting edges and details exactly where I want them.

Painting in Progress Images…

Watch the painting as it progresses!
Sketching in begins
If we're doing fireworks, we must have a dark enough sky to see said fireworks
Some lights are on, some are off, the night shadows begin to take shape along with various columns, windows, steps and more. Makes you wonder who is in their working that time of night...

Tuesday, May 27, 2025 10:38am
Perhaps to the blog viewer, it may not be a lot of difference between the last several photos, but as an artist, I know there is. The process of fine tuning the windows, lights and shadows are layers and layers of paint and acrylic pens. The T Square comes out, the paint - dry - paint - dry - paint - dry, is ongoing. And I absolutely have to blow the pictures up on the PC periodically to see the details to see the true what and where things begin and end - and what the heck is in that nook and cranny!

May 27, 2025 6:57pm

May 29, 2025 9:01pm. The fireworks art starting to blast off into the sky. I'll put in a picture when they start looking like something.

May 30, 2025 9:46am. And we got fireworks! Still in progress...

And we have a Capital Summer! Varnish will begin tomorrow. What do you think?
