Post 349: Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium, NC

Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium in NC

In late March, in April of this year (2024), a friend and I visited our friend Teresa at Harkers Island, North Carolina. We quickly made a list of things to do on this trip and the first check to mark off was the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium.

Another World Under the Surface

One of the world's most awesome things in God's creation is that there is so much we don't see, just under the water's surface. So to better get a picture of what we don't see in our air breathing life above water, our number one place to visit was the aquarium off the shore of Morehead City, NC.

Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium is at 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512

So over a couple of bridges we go - from Harkers Island, past Beaufort, through Morehead City, over to Atlantic Beach, driving toward the Emerald Isle, to arrive at the aquarium.

My friends Teresa and Debbie outside the Aquarium - the usual photos announcing "Wish you were here!...We ARE!!"

Debbie and I. The day started off cool but quickly warmed up although it was March 29th. And spring there, in NC, is several weeks ahead of us here, living in Northern Virginia.

So many great exhibits! Although I took a lot of pictures and I have a lot of them here, I won't let you suffer through the entirety of them.

Where's a fishing pole when you need one? Looks like dinner to me.

Who do we see here?

Did anyone know that there was such a thing as a Giant Otter? That guy is taller than Teresa!

Prehistoric monsters.

One of my favorites is seahorses. This exhibit had a herd of them in there of different colors but this guy went out for a spin.

The last exhibit - and the largest had the big boys.

I had a guy once complain about a jellyfish painting that I had at a gallery. He said my "Jellyfish Hijinks" painting was all wrong, that jellyfish do not swim upside down. He thought that I had the painting on display upside-down. Well, I certainly thought about that guy when I saw the jellies in the tank and snapped this picture (above). So na-na-de-na-na to that guy!

We didn't get to see any ponies this trip, on Shackleford Banks or while we were in Beaufort having lunch at a restaurant, but we did see some dolphins playing. From Beaufort, directly across the water you can sometimes spot the ponies on Carrot Island - Rachel Carson Reserve area (Islands).

I hope you enjoyed this post of the trip to see the sea creatures.

Post 63: Saltwater Aquarium 16x20 Acrylic Framed Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: Saltwater Aquarium

This was a fun painting to do - and pairing the right fish together took some research!

SKU: 01V21AC
Medium:  Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Framed?: Yes, Framed in a simple black floating frame
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

About this Painting…

I always liked aquariums and have had a few of them going over the years but never a saltwater tank. Therefore, I painted one. It is a 16x20 acrylic painted stretched canvas with some of those brightly colored favorite saltwater fish we all love - including, you guessed it, we found Nemo.

Easy care fish aquarium! No fish food required.

Update: Friday, May 7, 2021

This painting was juried and selected to appear at Sunshine Ridge Farm Winery at
15850 Sunshine Ridge Lane, Gainesville, VA 20155 from about May 25 to June 29, 2021. Gratefully, 4 out of 5 of my pieces entered were chosen for display!

Update: September 22, 2021

This painting was entered into a juried event called "Best of the Region 4" - wish me luck! Creative Brush is once again hosting the Best of the Region 4, which is sponsored by p-ART-ners and the Manassas Art Guild

Post 62: A Painting In Progress: Saltwater Aquarium

A Painting in Progress Name: Saltwater Aquarium

I already painted a Freshwater Aquarium, so naturally, I HAD to paint a saltwater one.

SKU: 01V21AC
Medium:  Acrylic
Size:  16x20 Stretched Canvas
Price: $Pending
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

Painting in Progress Images...

The habitat must be setup first...Although I don't always necessarily follow the rules, the background comes first. I look at whatever is farthest away, paint it first. If you are painting a landscape with a sun, you paint the sun first then fill in the sky, then the clouds.

2:15 Friday, January 29, 2021 progress thus far. The first fish emerges...

3:20 his friends are started to show up...

Things change at times. At first I thought on the right side foreground, there would be a rock there. Changed my mind.

10:25 AM Saturday, January 30, 2021 getting closer to being done...The next blog post will be the final painting.

Post 20: Freshwater Aquarium 10 x 20 Acrylic on Canvas

Painting Name: Freshwater Aquarium

SKU: #10T20AC
Medium: Acrylic Painting
Size: 10 x 20 Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2020
    (fish food not included)
This original artwork is a painting of a fresh water fish aquarium. It includes various fish the could be found in a fish tank, but no feeding is required.

Growing up, we had a freshwater aquarium going for many years and enjoyed watching our finned friends going through their busy, watery days. Not to mention the cycle of life...the stories we remember - from guppy babies, and "where did the Red-Tailed Shark go?"*, to "oooops!", the Angelfish ate one of our brand new Neon Tetras we -just- introduced to the aquarium.

So in honor of Neon Tetras everywhere, if you can't have the real aquarium, here is a maintenance-free aquarium.

There IS a story on "Where did the Red-Tailed Shark go?" I am hoping to get my brother to explain it...will update if I can get him to do it.
