What Brought About this Painting?

A marvelous wedding location in Berryville, VA, especially at Christmas - the historic Rosemont Manor. After last weekend being in the single digits, Thursday and Friday, December 29 for the Rehearsal Dinner and December 30 for the wedding - outside in front of the waterfall then the dinner in the "barn" was a spectacular event with temperatures in the 50-60s. This painting is a gift to the newlyweds to remember their beautiful day when they exchanged vows. Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Note the tiny champagne bucket and glasses on the bottom of the stairs, on the wall in the painting above.

Here are some pictures of in and around Rosemont, and the wedding.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas in every room.

Post 247: Gunston Hall Virginia Historical Home Series IV - 11x14 Acrylic Canvas

Painting Name: Gunston Hall

Living in Alexandria, Northern Virginia area when I was younger and later moving to Central Virginia, I did a lot of passing by of the signs for Gunston Hall. It wasn't until moving back to Northern VA in 2007 that I more recently and finally, visited this historic home owned by George Mason a few years ago. It is always fascinating to walk through these homes and imagine life as it was then - for all that lived and worked in and around these historical homes.

Painting local places in and around Virginia is a goal of mine. Places I went to years ago, places I have returned to, places I've lived and places with long histories that I hope will find my canvas.

Post 244: Historical Homes Series

Historical Homes Series

Painting things local to me is always interesting; there are so many fascinating places in Virginia too. Virginia is a great combination of seasons, sensations, and history since the United States began.

I've painted the gazebo in Occoquan, the Marina at Belmont Bay, Great Falls, and Virginia Beach. For this Historic Home Series, so far I have Mount Vernon and Monticello with the Governor's Mansion in Richmond, Virginia next on the radar.

I spent some of my childhood in Alexandria and my first visit to Mount Vernon was a school field trip. It was fascinating. Years later, upon moving back into the Northern Virginia area, a return to Mount Vernon was a must do. A few times! Even more fun was once seeing the house from the water.

Commissioned? No

I lived in Charlottesville and Central Virginia for a good many years. Hence, a few visits to Monticello. More recently, a trip to Monticello AND Trump Winery as its just past Monticello! Again, and even more fascinating house!

Our US history is what it is. The country wasn't perfect when these guys lived in these houses and it certainly isn't perfect now, but we have made improvements thankfully. Nonetheless, these historical houses are 'monuments' to the founders of this country. There is no where else I would rather live.

See the Next Painting...

The next in the Historical Homes series will be the Governor's Mansion in Richmond, Virginia, so keep an eye out for that one.

See one that tickles your fancy? Let me know!

Post 243: Monticello, Charlottesville, VA Historical Home Series II- 11x14 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: Monticello, Charlottesville, Virginia Historical Home Series

Having lived in Charlottesville for many years and in Central Virginia, an occasional visit to Monticello was always a fun and fascinating day. The genius of Jefferson is seen in every nook and cranny of the house.

What Brought About this Painting?

Decisions, decisions on what to paint next. Well, I do like painting local Virginia places I've been and would like to go to or back to. So I decided on a series of paintings of historical homes in Virginia. I have Mount Vernon almost done and Monticello was next.

If you go to the Monticello website, they have virtual walk throughs to see and interact with. Every time I have ever been to Monticello, you could never go upstairs, but the website lets you see the second and top floors, which is pretty cool.

Post 242: Mount Vernon, Virginia Historical Home Series I - 11x14 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: Mount Vernon, Virginia Historical Home Series

The home of the first president of the United States, George Washington's Mount Vernon in Alexandria, Virginia is an acrylic painting of one of the most historical homes in Virginia.

SKU: 01Q22ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 11x14 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2022
Framed?: No
Prints Available Upon Request or on Etsy

What Brought About this Painting?

I like painting 'local to me' places and things here in the great state of Virginia. One of the most historical of all places and houses in Virginia, is Mount Vernon in Alexandria. When I was in elementary school, Bucknell Elementary in Alexandria, Mount Vernon was a field trip spot. It has changed a lot over the years; the museum itself is incredible, but to lean on the mantel in George Washington's dining room is so cool.

In progress:

Post 74: There Once Was A Boat 16x20 Acrylic

Painting Name: There Once Was a Boat

Can you imagine what Noah and his family were thinking as they spent all that time floating around, caring for all the animals with them?

SKU: 02AC21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Framed?: Yes, a simple antique gold floating frame
Edition Year: 2021

What Brought About this Painting?
Well one morning I woke up with the thought to paint Noah's Ark floating out on the water. I didn't want the "bathtub kiddie ark" that you often see depicted and I did not want the stormy skies Ark on the angry water. Another thing I didn't think was too realistic was a bunch of the animals on the top deck looking out over the water. It just didn't seem that Noah would have allowed that or that it was plausible (Noah and family would have had to clean the decks), nor would the Ark have been built that way.

So, as I usually do, I did some research first to get an idea on what the Ark should look like without too much "artistic license". In my internet travels, what could be more interesting than some of the videos about Mount Ararat in Turkey and if they have found the ark? And of special interest to me is the Ark Encounter in Kentucky which led me to this video that I found absolutely fascinating...

Noah’s Ark and the Flood with Dr. Georgia Purdom

This is an hour long video and well worth the viewing and tackles the following:

"Was Noah’s Flood global? How big was the Ark? How did Noah fit all the animals on the Ark? Is there any evidence in rock layers and fossils for the Flood? This presentation will equip you with biblical and scientific answers that show that the Genesis account of the Ark and Flood are true history." A very cool video.

In Genesis, we are told some basics on what the ark looked like along with the size and we know it did not have sails. God steered the Ark where He wanted it. We know it was made of gopher wood and sealed in pitch inside and out. So what color did that make it?

Genesis 6 to 9 tells the story of Noah and about the Ark.

The Size: is figured to be 510 feet long (from the cubit measurements).

The Color: was probably black, maybe dark gray.

The Wood: Unknown tree today, but it was covered with pitch anyway.

Side Note: I would like to go and see the Ark Encounter someday. There are a lot of videos about the exhibits to check out so have a look at the Ark Encounter https://arkencounter.com/

I found this video too, its a good one. Fascinating!

The Ark had several levels and it had one window and one door. Think on that one a moment: One way to be saved and once the door is shut, no one else can enter.

How long did it take for Noah to build the Ark? It is estimated that it took 55 to 75 years for Noah to build the Ark, which also allows time for the people to hear about what was coming. (And that means the pitch would be baked by the sun for quite awhile too.)

We know that God caused wind to help dry the flood waters, which follows that the sea was probably fairly wavy to some degree as well and the sun would have helped evaporate water too.

So the painting started and this is where I ended up...

Often I will look at a painting for a day or so before deciding if it needs anything else. I saw a painting of the Ark with a whale tail but that seems gratuitous, as well as a dove. I would imagine Noah and family had quite a long time of floating about before Noah started letting the dove do a test flight.

I also considered the top of Mount Ararat appearing from under the flood waters off in the distance which is the resting place the Bible says where the Ark is. Genesis 8: 4 "Then the Ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat."

Let me know what you think.
