Post 361: BRS Bird Watching

Painting Name: BRS Bird Watching

Having grown up at Blue Ridge Shores in Louisa, Virginia, I keep my eyes open for spots around the lake and great photos of the area that I might be interested in painting. This is the second photograph taken by Peter Olsen that I have asked for permission to use as inspiration artwork.

SKU: 10AO24ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 14x14x1.5 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No

What Brought About this Painting?

Peter Olsen comes back to Blue Ridge Shores typically several times each summer and on Facebook, I often find and see the results of his camera. Always great photographs from around the lake, which goes by its acronym BRS and sometimes Lake Louisa. This summer of course, with the water level lowered because of the work being done on the new dam, all of the new growth of grasses made for a much different visual than is the usual. Nonetheless, Peter caught a Blue Heron and a White Egret in one photo, which also caught my eye.

I added the duck and the cardinal. Look closely to find the cardinal...

This painting is called "BRS Bird Watching" and is 14x14 painted with acrylics on a gallery wrapped canvas. I plan to bring this painting with me to the BRS Craft Fair held at the BRS Community Building on Saturday, November 23, 2024 in Louisa, Virginia.

The first photo by Peter that I asked permission to use was of an old pier on one side of the lake that was for all intents and purposes abandoned and left in disrepair for years. This is my version of his photograph, and I added a flying Blue Heron going past the broken down decking.

This painting is called "A Day at Blue Ridge Shores" and is 24x24 in acrylics on a gallery wrapped canvas. This one I will bring to the Fair as well.

See you at the Fair!

Post 353: Lincoln Memorial in the Fall, a DC Season Series

Painting Name: Lincoln Memorial in the Fall, a DC Season Series

A new commission for a new painting for a client is so exciting. Especially when the client is a repeat customer! We have a series of Washington DC artwork going, and so far we have spring and winter. This painting will be the Lincoln Memorial set in the fall. Watch the painting as it progresses here.

SKU: 08AJ24ACGC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 12x16 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No
Commissioned? Yes
SOLD

What Brought About this Painting?

I was contacted one day a couple of years ago on Etsy from a fellow that lives in Washington DC. At that time, he had seen one of my Washington Monument paintings with the spring cherry blossoms and he wanted one in a certain size. We agreed and I painted it for him. Some time after that, he wanted another painting. This time, he was thinking Washington DC in the winter, so I painted Christmas at the White House for him. Hence, this is how my Washington DC Seasons Series got started.

Spring in Washington DC

"Cherry Blossoms, an Annual DC Event" by Donna Liguria 12x16 Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped Canvas
Winter in Washington DC
"White House Having a White Christmas" by Donna Liguria 12x16 Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped Canvas

Now is time for Washington DC in the fall, so the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool are up. I'm thinking DC in the summer should have fireworks next, but we'll see.

Painting in Progress Images…

Watch the painting as it progresses! I'll add pictures as the painting moves along so keep an eye out here. The canvas preparation kicks off the painting and that isn't too thrilling to see, so give me some time to get this baby viewable...

Friday, August 16, 2024 3:23pm. Steadily sharpening up the lines and colors. Water reflection is always interesting.

Fall in Washington DC

After speaking with the client, he wanted it to be MORE fall colors so I added more orangey, yellowy, and orange-reds, and some leaves already down. The finished painting (maybe) (minus varnishing)!

What do you think?

What do you think?

The problem with finishing a painting is deciding what the next one will be.

Post 350: Spring at Merrimac Farm

Painting Name: Spring at Merrimac Farm

Bluebells are what spring is all about at Merrimac Farm located at 15014 Deepwood Lane, Nokesville, Virginia. Their annual Bluebell Festival was held on Sunday, April 7, 2024 and the Prince William Art Society and their new Plein Air Posse group attended with artwork at a tent and artists scattered about the trail painting.

What Brought About this Painting?

I helped out at the PWAS tent along with Elizabeth Stathis (PWAS President) that day at the Bluebell Festival. While taking a break in the afternoon, I took a walk on the bluebell trail and took lots of pictures along the trail as seen in the PWAS Artistry Spin Blog post, Blue Sunday The painting itself was mainly painting from these two pictures I snapped that day in Nokesville:

The Completed Painting

Alrighty, here is the completed painting (I think) as of April 29, 2024 9:39am
Never know, I may touch up something here or there, do you think I need to?

There are three birds...can you find them and name them?

Post 347: Book Case Art

Book Case Art

I named the 4x4 gallery wrapped canvases "Book Case Art" because they are so small and do not need to be wired to hang. They will sit in a book case, a side table, or on a shelf - no hanging around for them. Here are a few new Book Case Art pieces I've been working on and finished up this week.

From top left to right: Seashore Gull, Bottoms Up 2, and Virginia Bluebells at Merrimac Farm

From left to right (and both in progress): Good Pig and PWAS Plein Air Posse in the Bluebells

Painting Name: Virginia Bluebells at Merrimac Farm

SKU: 04Q24ACG
Medium: Acrylic and Acrylic Pens
Size: 4x4 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No

What Brought About this Painting?

After a recent visit to the Bluebell Festival in Nokesville, VA on Sunday, April 7, 2024, I had to paint some of the scenes from the day. It was beautiful to be there and the day was exceptionally nice too. The Bluebells, well, magnificent! A fun day for the Prince William Art Society (PWAS) members and the new Plein Air Posse group.

Painting Name: Good Pig

SKU: 04P24ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 4x4 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No
This painting is in progress...

What Brought About this Painting?

I have had a couple of requests in my small works for pigs. Everyone has their favorite animal, so my first pig, or piglet is born. The full grown pigs - not sure I'll get to that, but a cute little piglet, ok. I can't help but be reminded of Charlotte's Web and Wilbur. Anyway, I'm still working on "Good Pig" so he's not done yet. I'll update the finished photo later.

Painting Name: Seashore Gull

SKU: 04O24ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 4x4 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No

What Brought About this Painting?

I do like painting water - and seashores. The gull landed on it. A nice small painting to sit on your side table and remind you of a beach vacation.

Painting Name: Bottoms Up 2

SKU: 04N24ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 4x4 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No

What Brought About this Painting?

At the recent Bluebell Festival, I had some minis (3x4 with easels) and a few of my book case art pieces. Bottoms Up 1 with a swan's butt in the air sold. The lady that bought it kept saying how much she loved it and repeated "MORE duck butts!) I agreed. This one is a swan but with a little adjustments, the next one will be a duck butt.

Painting Name: PWAS Plein Air Posse in the Bluebells

SKU: 04R24ACG
Medium: Acrylic and Acrylic Pens
Size: 4x4 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No

At the recent trip to the Bluebell Festival and the inaugural outing for the PWAS Plein Air Posse group, this Book Case painting came about because of this photo below. Anyone recognize which artist this represents?

Do you have a spot on your book shelf for one of these?

The waves pushes the seashells and seaglass, driftwood and everything else up on the shore, but a big wave incoming, can reclaim it as well. What do you think?

Post 342: Find the Critters

Drawing Name: Find the Critters

The owner of "Vicki's Pond" wanted something with "hidden critters" for her Grandson. Little boys like the reptiles and snacks and spiders and such but I threw the book at this sketch on Mixed Media Paper.

SKU: 02E24CPAPC
Medium: Acrylic Pens, Prisma Colored Pencils
Size: 11x14 Mixed Media Paper
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No
Commissioned? Yes

What Brought About this Artwork?

This was a fun picture to do - and definitely a change of pace for me. Usually, I'm painting away in acrylics and with paint brushes on a stretched canvas. Do you remember the old kid's magazine called Highlights? They used to always have a Hidden Picture illustration where you would have to find all the items all through the drawing. This is sort of the thought behind this picture.

What's in the picture?…

Most of the critters are easy to see and obvious - but remember, this is for a 5 year old, I'm pretty sure. But in case you need help, here's what's in there:

2 Bunny Rabbits
1 Snake
2 Frogs
1 Turtle
1 Spider on Web
3 Ladybugs
1 Lizard
1 Eagle
1 Blue Jay
1 Cardinal
1 Bear
2 Butterflies
1 Deer
1 Squirrel
1 Praying Mantis
2 Dragonflies
1 Owl
1 Chameleon
1 Skunk
1 Red Fox
1 Duck
1 Blue Tailed Skink
1 Racoon
1 Ant

What do you think?

Update: Monday, February 26, 2024. This is the best verification that the shipment of "Find the Critters" and "Vicki's Pond" have arrived! Oh, the feeling of relief when you wrap and box your artwork, hand it off to the postal service, then await confirmation that is has arrived safe and sound. Then the rush of joy when your client has received their artwork and shows it off. And of course, that they love what you have created and picked YOU, to create the artwork for them. Thank you, Vicki in Illinois!

Picture used with permission.

Post 340: Commissioned Painting of Vicki's Pond

Painting Name: Vicki's Pond

Because of Etsy, because of koi ponds and perhaps also because of keywords, Vicki found me on Etsy because she liked my artwork, especially of koi ponds. She commissioned a painting from me to paint her pond - even though she resides several states over from me. Pretty awesome, right?

SKU: 01D24ACGC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x20 Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2024
Framed?: No
Commissioned? Yes

What Brought About this Painting?

Vicki put in a pond in her backyard in the later part of 2023 and wants a painting of her pond based on the Spring time - so she can view her pond in the best, most colorful season of the year - all year long.

Here is a photograph of her pond and she has let me know what she's planted that will be coming up in the Spring - I hope to make this painting as pretty as I believe her Spring time will be there and in the years to come.

Woohoo, so let's go!

Painting in Progress Images…

Watch the painting as it progresses!

Friday, January 26, 2024 10am. Paintings start with several layers of gesso that prepare the stretched canvas with a smoother finish for receiving the paint. The canvas is white and so is the gesso I am using, so there is not a lot to look at for the moment. I'll put usually 3-4 layers of gesso and those need to dry (and sometimes be sanded) before the sketching on the canvas can begin. Then its off to the races!

Sometimes it takes a couple of days to have something on canvas decent enough to show, but the gesso has begun!

Tuesday, January 30, 2024 8:34am. I have the sketching of the pond done and am now doing the underpainting in a Burnt Umber. So the canvas is a lot of brown at the moment. Underpainting is NOT pretty so be aware of that in this picture below. I'll probably build in a couple of layers of the paint to really fill in a base of paint to work with. Bare with me, it will start looking like something in a bit.

When I paint, I usually start from the farthest thing away in the painting and move forward from there. I build layers, LOTS of layers. For instance, in a landscape with the sun showing, I would start with the sun, then the sky plus clouds, mountains, then more forward. Doesn't mean that you may or may not see all of that but if trees are in the foreground, the sun, sky and clouds may be partially seen so they must be back there.

Same here for this painting. Although the fence is not a focal point, it is in the background so I have to have some of it - or hints of it, be seen. Back to painting and let's see where the next update goes.

Tuesday, January 30, 2024 5:11pm. Paint a layer, let it dry, paint a layer, walk away. Layers upon layers, building up color, and coverage. LONG way to go...

Wednesday, January 31, 2024 12:42pm. Adding more color, defining the rocks.

Thursday, February 1, 2024 8:38am. Good morning - what do you know, the sun is shining here in Northern Virginia! And its The Chosen Season 4 Episodes 1-3(?) day in the theaters! Can't wait to see it over the next few weeks.

I think my friend Vicki, over a few states finally got a wee bit of sun yesterday and she got some very nice photos for me. Knowing which direction the sun is coming from at different times a day makes the world of difference for the artist. So this is where I am this morning, back in the pond...
Thursday, February 1, 2024 11:41am. Got this far this morning. Time to take a break.

Thursday, February 1, 2024 5:02pm. The 3 P's. Progress, Progress, Progress. I'm getting hungry.
Friday, February 2, 2024 7:43am. Groundhog's Day and he saw his shadow so Spring is supposedly coming early - if you follow the furry weather forecast. You can click on a photo for a larger view.

Painting rocks this morning, lots of rocks as they surround the pond. Here are 2 links to past paintings with LOTS of rocks...And I hope to start really adding some pops of color.

Friday, February 2, 2024 11:40am. Maybe the Groundhog was right today - Spring is coming early! PROGRESS and of course, more layers.
Even flowers are layers - spots of the darkest color first, then several layers of increasingly lighter colors.

Friday, February 2, 2024 1:42pm. Stuff is starting to bloom all over.

Saturday, February 3, 2024 6:08am. Let's see what kind of progress can happen today! Bit of glare at the top of the canvas from the lights above it. In person, so much more intense color - and detail. That's what I do.
Tuesday, February 6, 2024 2:42pm I was out of town a couple of days - back home now. Let's see where the painting is now...

Wednesday, February 7, 2024 8:02am This picture includes light coming through the blinds this morning...Some new things starting to appear around the pond.

Wednesday, February 7, 2024 4:07pm The really cool thing about a deep canvas is painting the edges - all around. Never know what you might find there too. I've done this with a couple of paintings, where there was more to the story of the painting if you look around the edge.

Friday, February 9, 2024 6:25pm Finishing up the painting at this point, adding some small tweaks and ensuring the edges are smoothed out. Looking for anything unfinished - which I see one thing right in the middle to do...

As I've posted on other paintings, sometimes its a good idea to just stop and look at the work and see what it needs. Make sure the lighting is right, the shadows, the water reflections. I've called that the "tweaking phase".

And believe it or not, its a good idea to turn the painting upside-down and see how it feels. A different light, in another room, lets you see it differently. A painter knows when its done.

Monday, February 12, 2024 12:30pm. For the last few days, the tweak-a-thon has been ongoing - finalizing the edges of the painting, shadows and more.

The painting contains, although some are quite small:
3 Monarch Butterflies
2 Dragonflies
2 Frogs
1 Turtle
1 Hummingbird
1 Cardinal
1 Ladybug
Viewable Goldfish and Koi Fish - 13

Additionally around the pond are the Heron and the Lighthouse and on one side of the painting is the floating white swan. Here are a few photos of the painting hanging on a wall - although the light today is horrible. Total gray-out outside.

Photos are pre-varnishing and wiring but I think its done!
