Post 180: The Day That Brought This Baby Into the World

The Day That Brought This Baby Into the World

It is always a bit strange to hear the story of the day you were born, and funny too.

Birthday Ice Cream at Trattoria Villagio in Clifton, Virginia

My mother was just reminding me...

My Dad was away at Fort Lejeune when my Mom went into labor with me. My parents lived in Northern Virginia at the time near my Grandmother. My older brother, by almost 11 months was almost a year old so my Aunt Sonnie had to come over to watch him while my Grandma and Mom took a taxi to the hospital near by.

My Grandma was shushing my mother to not make any noise...like that can happen with someone so far along into labor with their second child.

My Mom was struggling to keep the noise level down but was barely holding on.

I told my Mother that she really missed her opportunity to grab my G-Ma by the lapels and scream at her something along the lines of, "YOU NEVER TOLD ME WHAT CAUSED ALL THIS!"

Hospital arrival and they quickly got my Mom up to her room.

My Grandma had some errands to run and left.

The Doctor said this baby is about to be born.

Few minutes later, I arrived and there was no one there to share the news with so the Doctor had my mom call a lady in his office to tell her, "It's a GIRL!"

After awhile my Grandmother came back and was, I presume, semi-chastised by the nurses that she missed the whole thing. My Mother and I were just discussing that as many children as my Grandma had, she should have realized that second babies aren't waiting around. Oh well. (I love my G-Ma but she was really a tough bird.)

I know someone did contact my Dad and I'll have to give an update on when they let him out, but he did arrive at some point. That long ago they kept you in the hospital a lot longer than they do now.

So, this is the short story of my arrival and for 1 month and a few days, my older brother and I are the same age. It has always struck me as very funny - I catch up with him every year and then he passes me. I really don't mind at all, he can hit and take the lead on the big numbers ahead of me any time.
