Painting Name: Mahogany Humidor 1 and 2

I have occasionally looked at the canvas as being the object I am painting. What I mean is just like my most recent painting, "Charcuterie Board", the canvas is the board with all the meats, cheeses, fruits, nuts and everything else placed on the board. Not so long ago, I painted 2 "Gold Boxes" where the boxes look like a small glittery gold gift box with a bow on them. What I'm getting at is this canvas is now a cigar humidor.

What Brought About this Painting?

Sometimes a painting sells (thankfully) and I consider painting something else in the same theme. "Bourbon and Cigar" went on to a new home - I really liked that painting! Definitely a masculine feel to it of course. It was received very well at Open Space Arts - I know several people considered it, so that just feels like I need a similar themed painting, especially with Christmas and Arts Alive coming.

So this painting will be a glass-topped mahogany cigar humidor. Watch it has it progresses.

Paintings never look good when they first start. The unfortunate thing about blog posts is that the first image on the blog is what naturally shows when you post on most social sites. I wonder if some people see "my latest painting of an artwork in progress" and that initial photo in all its unglorified dignity is all they see and they don't see the final product... Anyway, not something I can fuss with at the moment I suppose unless I reorganize the blog post later. Something to consider.

They say, "Don't go grocery shopping on an empty stomach". I think the same could pretty much be said when painting, but along these lines, "when painting food, make sure you eat a good meal(s) while you are painting it". Good golly, Miss Molly, I am hungry!

What Brought About this Painting?

Sometimes I wake up in the morning with a subject in my head to paint. For whatever reason, I woke up with "cheese". And what's a great way to have cheese? A charcuterie board. You know the song from Julie Andrews, "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things". Well, there ya go. And the farther the painting gets, the more I want to rummage the cheese section at Wegmans.

Friday, August 19, 2022 8:27am - With the am light shining on "Charcuterie Board" I added some mostly tiny tweaks. (Morning rays of sunshine on the canvas are not painted on.)

Varnish and a wire up next and Charcuterie Board is ready to hang!

The art show at Open Space Arts at Stonebridge, will end on August 14 - so see it before it is gone!

Where is Open Space Arts?

You can find the art gallery at 15000 #140 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, VA. Most guests are amazed that there IS an art gallery not only in the shopping center but having such a beautiful one in Prince William County!

This particular art show began on June 29, with 36 artists showing their stuff - and a wide variety of styles, mediums and techniques it is!

Post 261: A Day at Blue Ridge Shores

Thanks to photographer Peter Olsen for the use of his wonderful snapshots of his visits to Blue Ridge Shores in Louisa, Virginia and the influence for several paintings I have done of BRS. And thanks to the Beckett's at BRS for those boat rides around the lake on summer evenings with my mom, bro and sister-in-law.

What Brought About this Painting?

Growing up at BRS was a wonderful experience for the most part and I've written about that before, and it's quite nostalgic - every visit. I've had this painting in mind for awhile, and finally started it while in Richmond, Virginia - house sitting, dog and cat sitting for a cousin with my aunt. My cousin's husband has an art studio in the pool house (thanks for the use, cousin!...for the POOL and the ART STUDIO!) so I set up my canvas on the easel with my paints.

When I asked Peter for permission to use his photo of the old stairs down to the pier, I believe he said they are no longer there. Someone must have cleaned that lot up but the black and white photograph of them was definitely not only striking, but a long memory of life around the lake, from years ago, having a boat and skiing around the lake and more recently boat rides with the Beckett's and family.

Not sure if I like the previous one better or not, as you can see, the water changed. One of those, "to tweak or not to tweak, that is the question". Ugh.

Bee Festival Saturday, June 25, 2022

The second annual Bee Festival took place Saturday, June 25, 2022 on the grounds of the Liberia House in Manassas, Virginia. The Manassas Art Guild (MAG) had 2 tents up and the members enjoyed the day having their art up to be seen by the many visitors.

"Save the bees + pollinators. Plant native! Dress like a pollinator. Costume parade, waggle dance, Food, mead, music, farm animals and more! Presented by: City of Manassas Beautification Committee" - From the Prince William Chamber of Commerce

The real stars of the show - the actual bee hives on the Liberia House grounds. Also note the artwork on the bee hives...I admire the folks in Manassas for their fantastic creativity and work at making the arts such an important part of their communities in everyday life at every opportunity.
