Post 378: Washington DC Seasons Series - A Capital Summer

Painting Name: A Capital Summer

What says summer in Washington DC better than fireworks? This painting is the fourth in my Washington DC Seasons Series that features the US Capital from the Eastern side with a back drop of Fourth of July fireworks, celebrating Independence Day.

Size: 12x16x1.5 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2025
Framed?: No
Commissioned? Yes
SOLD

What Brought About this Painting?

This is the fourth in a series of paintings of various Washington DC locations in all four seasons featuring 4 different spots in the Nation's Capital. I'm not sure we knew that the first commission would grow as it has, but the first request came from a visitor to the Open Space Arts gallery that the Prince William Art Society once staffed for our members and artists living all around Prince William County. This newfound friend in Alexandria, VA loved a painting I did of the spring cherry blossoms in DC that featured the Washington Monument, but he wanted a different size than the previous work.

The first in the series was "Cherry Blossoms an Annual DC Event"

I was contacted by my friend again, with the request for Washington DC in the winter, thus the next season was born.

The second was "White House Having a White Christmas"

The third of the series was "Lincoln Memorial in the Fall"

Each of the Washington DC Series is 12x16x1.5 and is created with Acrylics and Acrylic Pens. Those acrylic fine point pens are great for getting edges and details exactly where I want them.

Painting in Progress Images…

Watch the painting as it progresses!
Sketching in begins
If we're doing fireworks, we must have a dark enough sky to see said fireworks
Some lights are on, some are off, the night shadows begin to take shape along with various columns, windows, steps and more. Makes you wonder who is in their working that time of night...

Perhaps to the blog viewer, it may not be a lot of difference between the last several photos, but as an artist, I know there is. The process of fine tuning the windows, lights and shadows are layers and layers of paint and acrylic pens. The T Square comes out, the paint - dry - paint - dry - paint - dry, is ongoing. And I absolutely have to blow the pictures up on the PC periodically to see the details to see the true what and where things begin and end - and what the heck is in that nook and cranny!

May 29, 2025 9:01pm. The fireworks art starting to blast off into the sky. I'll put in a picture when they start looking like something.

May 30, 2025 9:46am. And we got fireworks! Still in progress...

And we have a Capital Summer! Varnish will begin tomorrow. What do you think?

Post 377: PWAS Member Art Exhibition at the ARTfactory

PWAS Member Art Exhibition at the ARTfactory

The Prince William Art Society Member Art Exhibition is currently showing at the ARTfactory in Manassas, VA. Sandra McCelland Lewin and I stopped in yesterday to check out the show and see Jordan Exum the ARTfactory's Gallery Director.

Around the Art Gallery

I suppose the first thing we all do when we go into a gallery where our art is hanging is to look for our own art...Guilty here! So have a look and find your own - although I may not have quite captured all of the pieces on display.

Online Web Gallery - check this out, it is all of the artwork with details

Over the river and through the woods on Friday, May 16, we had to first pickup our unsold art from the recent Spring Art at the Mill art show at the Burwell Morgan Mill in Milwood, VA. Then we stopped in Manassas. We heard rumors that some artworks had sold already at the new show that just opened at the ARTfactory this week.

And so that the PWAS artists are aware, the ARTfactory does, and prefers to have all of the art stay up on the walls for the duration of the show whenever possible. Occasionally - and understandably - some gallery visitors don't live nearby so that if they want to purchase an artwork, the gallery has arranged so that the purchased artwork can be taken with them.

Katie Keller Dugan is above and my "Going for a Run" is below, which I painted this year.

Bettie Sperty's artwork above, and "Patio Garden" is below, that I painted early 2025.
Staci Blanchard's artwork sold

"Spring at Merrimac Farm" is a 16x20 gallery wrapped canvas that I painted in 2024 after going to the Bluebell Festival at Merrimac Farm. I was very pleased to see that the piece was purchased and will be picked up next week as a gift for someone.
"Stormy Seas" is another artwork that I did late in 2024

Art Reception Saturday, May 17, 2025 6-8pm

I do believe the ARTfactory will be filled with Prince William Art Society artists, friends, and family this evening along with gallery visitors to see and enjoy the show. Wall-to-wall art lovers - I'd love to see that for the ARTfactory's Artist Reception tonight (ohhh let's just say, all day).

And by the way, VOTE for People's Choice while you art there!

Come out and meet the artists and see all of the very diverse art from Prince William County's oldest art group (est. 1971). See you at the show!

Post 376: Art at the Mill Art Reception May 2025

Art at the Mill Art Reception May 2025

Sunday, May 4, 2025. May the Fourth by with you. A day to travel out to 15 Tannery Lane in Milwood, Virginia for the Spring Art at the Mill Art Reception.

The Web Gallery will only be open for a period of time so check that out here https://artatthemillspring2025.artcall.org/pages/web-gallery while you can. The show itself will end on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

At the picnic table are Sandra McClelland Lewin and her husband John, speaking to an Art at the Mill rep.

The first floor had a lot more art than in past year's that we have seen. And plenty of art on the table wrapped up and ready for pickup.

Second floor top of the stairs. My painting "On the Table" in acrylics

My painting "Bluebell Strolling at Merrimac Farm" in acrylics

Second Floor and out the window

This art reception was the busiest that I have seen. Both a LOT of artists and apparently a lot of guests. And I had a couple of people ask me how they could make a purchase, so I found a AATM rep so they could start the sale process.

Saw lots of artists I know from around the area and met a bunch more. Another wonderful show out at the Burwell-Morgan Mill. Pickup of artwork will be May 16, 17, 18...unless I sell!

So until the Fall Art Show...
