Post 137: PWAS 50th Anniversary More Pictures Part 2

PWAS 50th Anniversary continued - Part 2

Recently, the Prince William Art Society celebrated 50 YEARS! Isn't that awesome! The members celebrated that golden milestone on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at The Winery at Sunshine Ridge Farm located at 15850 Sunshine Ridge Lane, Gainesville, VA 20155. Their website is https://www.thewineryatsunshineridgefarms.com/

In my previous post I had my photographs as well as a few that a friend of mine took and those are found in this blog post: https://donnascavepainting.blogspot.com/2021/06/pwas-50th-anniversary-celebration-at.html so be sure and view those too.

On with the show...

I wish I had asked what was on the mantle, an interesting object is it not? If anyone knows, let me know! Artwork above L to R is 1. "Strutting My Peacock Stuff" by Donna Liguria, 2. Jim Gallagher, 3. unknown, 4. Jim Gallagher, unknown.

The photographs were taken by various PWAS members so I am not sure to whom the credits toll.  The first two artworks above from left to right is by Bettie Sperty, 3. unsure, 4. Bettie, 5. unsure. I will update if I learn more, so please let me know!

Post 136: Get Flowers, Paint Them, Still Life 16x16 Acrylic on Canvas

Painting Name: Get Flowers, Paint Them

When given flowers, take a picture of them, then paint them. It lasts longer.

SKU: 06BV21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 16x16 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Price: $295.00
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

First of all, this first picture is of the flower vase - the real thing.

This is what my painting will be based on.

Painting in Progress Images…
The next few are in progress pictures with the final at the end.

Artistic license taken, my angle of viewing was a little off from my photograph anyway.

Painting in Progress: This should be interesting

Painting in Progress: HINT, take a picture of your arrangement because of course, the flowers will not last but so long and the water, probably less.

What Brought About this Painting?
On Saturday, June 5th, 2021, Prince William Art Society celebrated its 50th Anniversary! We were invited to take home the flower arrangement on the table so what better use of it than to paint it! Nothing like painting them while they are alive or from a picture when possible!

And the finished painting...

Post 135: Lovely Lavender, 6x6 Stretched Canvas, a Fragrant Posting

Painting Name: Lovely Lavender

I have become lavender greedy. I have found lavender shower gel, spray, soap and am on the hunt for more lavender scented goodies.

SKU: 06BU21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Stretched Canvas
Price: SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

The Painting in Progress Images…

The first photo is the painting in progress with the final at the end.

I was thinking about that small warning on review mirrors: "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear". A friend that went with me to the PWAS 50th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 5, 2021 was very surprised when she finally viewed my artwork -in person- and said, "the phone really does NOT do the painting justice, does it?" And she is right, looking online, or on your phone does NOT do artwork justice at all.

I hope you know what I mean. It's not just the color rendering in a device to the human eye, but its also a bit of distortion in camera angles and probably a whole lot more than I can cover here. The beauty of an artwork is confirmed in being IN PERSON. At least, I am going with the notion that a "pretty painting" is best viewed in person, as well as a "bad" one if there is such a thing.

Meandering thought, there is art a person doesn't like, but does that make it bad? Anyway, seeing a piece of artwork in person DOES make a world of difference that a camera and displaying on the internet cannot replicate.

What Brought About this Painting?
The next theme for the Prince William Art Society (PWAS, pronounced "P-waz") is flora, fauna and gatherings...interesting combo. The word is that hopefully the art submitted is not the usual overdone, "still life painting pose"...so, in search of a not-the-usual (I hope) flower painting, I came up with bits of lavender.

Someone really needs to come up with paint floral fragrances that don't diminish over time - wouldn't that be a GREAT IDEA!!!????

This post will be a little different than some of my previous "Painting in Progress" posts, where I have the progress and the final all-in-one post.

Lovely Lavender, 6x6

Quotes about Lavender: To make a perfume, take some rose water and wash your hands in it, then take a lavender flower and rub it with your palms, and you will achieve the desired effect".
-Leonardo da Vinci
The air was fragrant with a thousand trodden aromatic herbs, with fields of lavender, and with the brightest roses blushing in tufts all over the meadows
-William C. Bryant

Post 134: PWAS 50th Anniversary Celebration at Sunshine Ridge Farm Winery Part 1

PWAS 50th Anniversary Celebration at Sunshine Ridge Farm Winery Part 1

June 5, 2021 PWAS is 50!
We celebrated at Sunshine Ridge Farm Winery
15850 Sunshine Ridge Lane
Gainesville, VA 20155

This is the brochure that was handed out, with the first image being one side of the brochure...

And this was the inside of the brochure featuring the artists displaying their artwork at the JURIED show - which means we submitted artwork to be included and a third party person selected which pieces to show. Four out of five of my pieces were selected!

I know, I know, I should have taken more pictures of the people! Other people were taking pictures so I hope to update this soon with more...

Nonetheless, it was a fun evening thanks to PWAS and to Sunshine Ridge Farm Winery!

Post 133: Golf Ball, 6x6 Acrylic on Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: Golf Ball

This was a short series of paintings - sports ball paintings - I only did 3 - golf ball, football and soccer ball. May return to the subject at a later date.

SKU: 06BT21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Stretched Canvas
Price: SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?
I suppose I have started a mini series going of sports paintings on whichever ball that game uses. This could go for awhile - yet I may be limited to the availability of the canvases I am using for these. I only have one more of the same type of canvases - 6x6x1.5 Artist Loft L1 I found at Michaels. They came in a package of 6 or 8.

The previous sports balls artworks I have painted are a football and a soccer ball with their goal posts or field goals in the background.

For the golf ball, the "goal" is to play the ball in as few a strokes as possible to sink it in the golf course hole. So the golf ball in this painting sits just shy of the hole and the putter is coming in to remedy that situation.

Hmmm, that last mini canvas...

Basketball
Baseball
Bowling Ball
Tennis Ball
Volley Ball
Wiffleball
Cricket Ball
Table Tennis Ball
...there are more but the choices should be the more popular ones. We shall see, unless you want a vote on it.

Post 132: Football, 6x6 Acrylic on Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: Football

Ten, Fourteen, Twenty-two, HIKE!

SKU: 06BQ21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

What Brought About this Painting?
If anything, I appear to be a versatile painter you may say. And apparently that, to some means I am "all over the place" and need to focus in more. I've been reading that galleries like artists will sellable works that more "themed" or related.

I'll have to dwell on that one.

In the meantime, first down and ten.

Post 131: Art Prints of My Paintings is an Option

Art Prints of My Paintings is an Option

Ever so slowly, I am learning to create art prints of selected artworks from my painting inventory. It is an interesting education which INCLUDES:

1. Learning how to use my new Nikon Coolpix B500 Camera - because I know I need better quality pictures at the very first.
2. Learning how to best use my Epson Expression Premium EcoTank Wireless 5-Color All-in-One Supertank Printer with Scanner, Copier and Ethernet - which is needed in general, but I wanted to create at least my own smaller sized prints.
3. Learning how to use Photoshop and Lightroom - I have used PS some in the past at work but not to this degree.
4. Learn the details of the world of art prints - from the acronyms, how to number them, how to sign them, how to package and how to ship them.

Art prints are a good option for the art seller and the art buyer. If the original has already sold, the artist can make some income from the print of that artwork. If an original painting is out of budget for the art buyer, an art print presents a more affordable way to "collect" something from an artist that is liked.

In between the learning of art print construction, art photography, art editing and art marketing, I paint a bit.

Some prints will start appearing on my Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/shop/DonnaLiguriaArt under the Art Prints category.

I will also need a collection of prints for sale at art shows and for Clearbrook Center of the Arts at Tackett's Mill in Woodbridge, VA. This is where PWAS - Prince William Art Society members hang some of their selected artworks and prints. The selections change bi-monthly and this is what it looks like at the moment...Let's take a walk through the gallery...

Clearbrook Center of the Arts entrance (to the left) is located at Tackett's Mill on the lower side, in Woodbridge, Virginia. It is only about a mile away from Occoquan up Old Bridge Road and not far from 95 at all. The hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

The "Patriotic and Monuments" Theme Wall at Clearbrook Center of the Arts is to your immediate right as you come in the door. The Theme Wall changes bimonthly and next month's theme is "Gatherings" for July and August.

The upstairs is currently not in use by PWAS. Bi-Monthly many of the PWAS members will change out some if not all, of their artwork. So it is ever changing, especially if something sells!

My animal fur skin pattern series plus "Tiger Face", minus the Giraffe fur (that one sold).

Zebra Skin Pattern by Donna Liguria, is a framed 10x10 acrylic on stretched canvas. It was part of a series of animal fur/skin pattern paintings.

One of the rooms at Clearbrook. The center painting of the egrets is by Sandra McClelland Lewin, I love her work! My "Great Falls" and "Island Paradise in a Red Dress" flank her larger painting.

Ken Meardon's photos on canvas and photos on ceiling fan blades!

Another room at Clearbrook with a sitting area.

Sitting area continued.

A part of what PWAS does annually is offer a scholarship program to high school students. Unfortunately, with Covid affected the school systems so drastically in 2020 and 2021, a scholarship could not be awarded with the chaos of the "school from home" mandate. We all hope that 2022 will truly be back to "normal" whatever that is now/then.

"Spring in Occoquan" by Donna Liguria is a 10x10 framed acrylic on stretched canvas.

The PWAS theme wall as you come in the front door is located on the immediate right - and the theme until the end of June is "Patriotic and Monuments". This one is my "America Backs the Blue".

As you can see, there is quite a variety of art works and styles. And those folding stands hold different artist's prints too.

Of course, seeing an artwork IN PERSON is the best course of action. The camera, the internet, the pixels, the PC or the phone you view artwork from just does not do the art justice. But for those that I know that do not live close by, at least you get an idea of what Clearbrook looks like.

Check out the PWAS website with the artist gallery section to see some samples of some of the members

In finishing this post up...

I would be interested to hear from you if you have seen an artwork of mine and would be interested in an art print if the original is not in the cards at this time. They say it is a good way to get your foot in the door. If you know the size of work, that would be good to know too.
