Post 151: Book Review: Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon

Book Review: Steal Like an Artist

Author: Austin Kleon
Edition Year: 2012

Think about it, every pose, every stance, every expression has already been painted, drawn, sketched, and photographed. Every animal, bird, insect, flower, and tree has been the subject of the same. Every mountain, ocean wave, sunrise and sunset too. Ok, so as this book and the Bible point out in Ecclesiastes 1:9:

What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

Humans have been around for quite awhile and we have rehashed what has been done before us, seen by most anyone, said before by someone else, thought of by many, written about by some, or painted by another artist in the past. That is fine, we each have to live our own life and paths and takes on things.

What I like about this book is that Austin Kleon describes that this is what we do and need to do - just put your own creative take or twist on it. Or even our own colors on it.

As noted in a previous post, my aunt and I are house sitting in Richmond, Virginia for my cousin while they are away. It's been relaxing. The "Steal Like an Artist" book I found in the guest room belongs to my cousin and it was a fun read.  I especially liked his notes on daily logging "What are the best things that happened today?" Focus on the great things in life, while learning to deal - properly - with the less agreeable things. Keep up the good fight, keep doing YOUR thing, keep working and moving forward.

Back to the pool...although this morning I had to fish out the biggest frog I have EVER seen.

Post 150: Learning to Use Watercolor Paint while in Richmond, VA

Learning to Use Watercolor Paint

I am currently sharing house sitting duties with an aunt in Richmond, Virginia for a cousin. It is a bit of a vacation for me as there is a pool to swim about in, an outdoor TV - bar - sitting areas - a cool pool house, and all around great house. (With shopping of any sort nearby) We did it a couple of times last year and even during the lockdowns, it has been a nice get away from our own homes for a bit of time.

Because I knew I would be away from home for a bit, I brought watercolors with me to attempt the new -for me- media.

I've been using acrylics for most of my artist exploration in recent years. In school and early life, I did use oils some but this is my first real excursion into the unknown world of watercolor.

Break out the YouTube videos and Google research on the how to's, hints and tricks of watercolor...first things first: Get the essential list of materials and the basics on them.

Essential Watercolor Supply List

1. Watercolor paint - pans or tubes
2. Paper - rough (texture), cold press, hot press (smooth).
Paper types - 90 lb lightweight, 140 lb medium, 300 lb heavyweight
3. Brushes - 1-size 4 or 6 round; 1-size 10 or 12 round; 1- size 1/2 inch or 1 inch flat brush
4. Palettes
5. Thick backboard or mat
6. Masking tape
7. Paper towels
8. Glass or plastic containers
9. Scrap watercolor paper
10. Pencil, graphite, sharpener and kneaded eraser
11. Soap - mild for cleaning brushes

Add-ons as needed:
12. Sea sponges
13. Spray bottle
14. Watercolor Pens
15. Watercolor Pencils
16. Mediums
17. Spray Varnish
18. Sketch book, Journal book
19. Masking fluid and brush for use with it
20. Misc. - binder clips, rulers

It is much different than acrylic paint. As I have read, acrylic is considered the easiest to use as its qualities include quick dry times and its opaqueness. Basically, you work the paint from dark to light and a biggie is that in acrylics, you can cover up your boo-boos effectively. (Of course, I never make a boo-boo.)

Watercolors are a whole different animal. A different mind set. White and light areas need to be considered BEFORE you paint. You have to preserve your white space because you cannot put the white highlights in later. Or paint in white clouds like you can over an acrylic blue sky. (If you use black watercolor paper, change of plan.)

Watercolor Considerations

Paint spreads and can be mixed on the paper and/or in the palette (because of the flow of water, how much water is used) and special effects too are to be considered (can you say, "salt"?). The style of watercolor painting to be applied: Wet on wet, wet on dry or combo of those as well. Are you planning on mixed media?

Watercolors are translucent so light can pass through, maybe not details though - it diffuses the light passing through it.

With watercolors, you usually work from light to the darker colors.

Mistakes are not easily hidden or covered over, making watercolors less forgiving than acrylics.

Apparently learning to control the amount of water to use is key to best use in watercoloring and that comes with patience and practice.

Watercolor may be the most difficult of the mediums to use, and have read the most expensive. I'll need more research on that.

Gouache Paint

I did purchase some Gouache paint to try as well. What is it?

"Gouache paint is opaque but becomes translucent when water is added. When using Gouache you have the option to either water it down or build up the consistency of the paint. The end result of a gouache painted piece is a radiant bright piece of artwork with a matte finish."

So there may be a way to add those "highlights" later after all....hmmm. Experiment time!

With all of this in mind, yesterday, I broke out the paints and paper.

My first attempt at watercolor.

UGH. My first attempt at watercolor water painting, incomplete 6/30/21.

I also read that artists should journal, journal and journal all of their work. For one thing, it will show how far you have come over time - I hope. It also notes the art you have started and completed. Other reasons for journaling every day is that you make note of what inspired that day - any thing from a movie to the sunrise or sunset. A book read, a suggestion, a to do, whatever. It's a tracking of you and your progress. Our memories aren't all that reliable especially over time so it pays when you need a reminder in your journal records.

Now, if only I can get my aunt to give watercolor a try....

Working on a second version of the same watercolor.

Post 149: Growing Up Blue Ridge Shores, Louisa, Virginia

A Story of Blue Ridge Shores…

We first heard of Blue Ridge Shores that I can think of was around 1965ish from my grandparents, Doug and Louise Jackson. They had purchased a home in the new community in Louisa County, Virginia and in the summers my mom and dad would pack up the car with 3 kids and all their stuff and we would drive from Alexandria to Louisa, Virginia down 95 South.

You know the song, "Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother's house we go..." (sing along)

Friday, June 25, 2021 9:45 AM Arriving at BRS

We did that drive very often and I do remember the aunts and uncles and ALL the kids (AKA cousins) ALL landing at G'ma's house and everyone sleeping all over the place. Kids on the floor, and their parents were scattered about. Cousins EVERYWHERE. We loved playing at that house and Grandma ruled the kitchen with an iron rolling pin. There was always a lot of laughter. And giggling. That was from G'pa.

We kids played on the rocks between Grandma's house and the Pettit's house. And I got to go fishing with my Grandpa there. And I learned to love gardening from my Grandpa. Homegrown strawberry fields forever.

This was Grandma's House

Then my parents bought a small yellow summer house on Fairview Drive. So now my parents would pack up the 3 kids, the cat and the dog and all their stuff and do the 95 South drive and we had our own home to go to for the summers. (Try driving with kitty litter being used.) Eventually, other aunts and uncles bought homes too. Close enough to walk to easily, and we did. Often.

And we got to know the neighbors, remember the Breezes? Oh Pearl and Francis, and Willie and Lula, and of course, Stoney.

All the crazy things and stories over the years, so many - here are a few:
  • Family croquet in the yard.
  • My dad breaking a leg while playing football with the family.
  • All of the 4ths of July celebrations and fireworks lighting up the night sky. Say a lot of "Ewww and Ahhhs" here. Wide eyed kids mesmerized by all the colors and wonder.
  • And the awful bands at the 4th of July celebrations and dancing on the tennis courts while the adults congregated on the hill above.
  • My mom running and WINNING a race.at the 4th of July foot races.
  • The lady baseball player who lived up from us practicing her fastball and it zipping by my windows and the LOUD smack of it landing in her friend's mitt.
  • The skunk family deciding to come out and visit during a big croquet match.
  • My cousin riding her bike singing at the top of her lungs, hitting gravel and biting the dust while her "crush" drove by and her underwear and pjs flying up in the air.
  • The hurricane that took out the dam and the most horrible summer of damn mosquitoes that followed. (by the way, this was Hurricane Camille)
  • Digging up worms, going fishing, cleaning the fish and then cooking and eating the fish.
  • Using a small blue plastic boat to catch fish in the kiddie pool area with my dad.
  • Wondering if you swallowed watermelon seeds, if you would grow a watermelon inside of you...
Eventually, on August 8, 1969, we moved from Alexandria, Virginia to Blue Ridge Shores for good. It was a GREAT childhood. The Louisa school system was culture shock coming from Alexandria at that time but summers were grand. My mom was known as "Momma G" and flipped burgers and sold fries and candy at the concession stand. I had unnumbered adopted brothers and sisters because EVERYONE called my mom, Momma G.

The juke box blared over the speakers while we baked in the sun. The Beatles were IT! And the Rolling Stones. We spent the whole day at the beach and many evenings too. We swam to the big raft and dived off to swim back, rinse and repeat.

Somebody I know very well blew up frogs too with fire crackers. Poor amphibians. Several frogs had shortened lives after being repeatedly tossed out into the water and swimming back to the shore, ever more slowly after each toss and eventually sinking into obscurity or depending on their size, gulped down by a fish.

The memories of snow sledding down the hill above the beach and riding the bus to school were epic. My brother, Donnie bouncing over the back seat of the bus to the seat in front of him was hilarious. Of course, my other brother Dave, doing the Evil Knievel on his bicycle off the marina into the water is not to be forgotten either.

The church at the back gate was started with the help of my whole family. It actually did have its first meetings at the "concession stand" with Reverend Petty. Then a bunch of people all helped to build Blue Ridge Shores Baptist Church right at the back gate.

Summer was when all the families from Northern Virginia and Maryland (mostly) would come on the weekends and for vacations and many friendships were started. Learning to ski was a top priority.

George Anderson and Nathan Bozarth at the Main Beach, early 70's. Unknown name for the girl and unsure if the guy on the swing is my older brother.

So we kids grew up, started high school and started -gasp- dating. If you had a boat, you were AWESOME. A great memory is of the Olsen brothers skiing behind our boat and the older bro would start off double skiing on 2 skis with his younger bro holding his waist then climbing up on his shoulders, then Chuck would drop one ski, and around the lake we would go. Pete and Arthur Olsen, the twins would take turns climbing up the skiing Chuck.

Getting Gas at the Marina, Warren Sutherland's Boat, early 70's

So life moves on and we grew up. Then we started getting married. And buying our own home(s) at BRS. And then life changes in its various ways sometimes included moving away. But I still love coming back to Blue Ridge Shores. I still have family there so visiting is a to-do list thing.

Recently, while visiting my mom this spring, my aunt and I went for a walk about. We did all the remembering of who lived in that house and what happened here and there. How she met her husband at the beach. How I met mine. We walked up the hill and around a couple of the streets and almost anywhere and everywhere there were things to remember and point out. And seeing -wow- all the new homes, renovations, and additions.

BRS Main Beach 2021

We talked of all the people we knew, many who are now gone, some of the bad stories of bad events too. Thankfully there are not as many of those.

And just recently, my brother, my mom and sister in law and I went for a boat ride around the lake with the Becketts. It was a nice view of the lake from the water to see all the changes too.

My Mom, Kelly B and "Louie, Louie, Louie - Louieeee"

Louie wanted to say hi to the geese. They weren't agreeable

And wouldn't you know when we got back to the main beach, there was a group of kids at the marina on bicycles and my brother mentioned to them that he used to ride his bike off the pier. Well, we got a great laugh when one of them did it too.

So the kids that were kids when I was a kid, are all grown up now much like the trees that tower over us as our views have changed in the lots all around BRS. And their kids are looking at the lake with the wonder that we did.

It is quite the varied history of Blue Ridge Shores and the experiences of our life stories. Some people have come back to spend their summers much like they did with their parents, while some kids have taken ownership of their parents homes and carry on with their own family traditions. Others have moved on with their lives elsewhere.

Nonetheless, BRS will always be a warm and fuzzy memory of my childhood as an awesome, safe and great place to grow up. And maybe for you too. And your kids.

Post 148: Blue Heron at Blue Ridge Shores in Louisa, Virginia V2, 10x20 Acrylic

Painting Name: Blue Heron at Blue Ridge Shores, Louisa, Virginia Version 2

SKU: 06CD21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 10x20 Stretched Canvas SOLD
Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: No
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?

There was such a great response for the first Blue Heron painting (v1) that I just had to do a version 2!

Version 2 - "Blue" doesn't have feet in this one.

Sides of painting are painted as well, so it does not necessarily have to be framed.

Blue Heron at Blue Ridge Shores, Louisa, Virginia versions 1 and 2 are shown here. Version 1 on the left sold immediately (before I even completed it!).

Maybe not so subtle variations in the versions. Version 1 is a little bit deeper colors and you see a little more of the pier and a pole in the water in the background. Version 2 on the right, "Blue" does not have his feet showing.

Post 147: Streams Never Stay the Same 11x14 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas Landscape

Painting Name: Streams Never Stay the Same

SKU: 06CE21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 11x14 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Edition Year: 2021
Framed?: No

Update: September 22, 2021

This painting was entered into a juried event called "Best of the Region 4" - wish me luck! Creative Brush is once again hosting the Best of the Region 4, which is sponsored by p-ART-ners and the Manassas Art Guild

What Brought About this Painting?

The title of this painting comes from a quote by Gary Snyder
"Streams and mountains never stay the same."

Always changing in every way. The light that day, the rain that falls, the creatures that visit, the time of year, the color of the leaves and where the leaves are. Everything changes, nothing remains the same.

Landscapes are, for me at least, very relaxing to paint. Maybe to look at too, what do you think?

Kind of makes me want to take off my shoes and roll up my pants legs and step into the water and wiggle my toes. Then look for any of the crawfish or minnow - any of the stream's wild life.

A tad bit of glare on the right side of the image when I took the photo of the painting. UGH, still learning how to fix that in PhotoShop.

Friday, June 18, 2021 10:45 AM Moving along on another big blue heron bird painting. Ooops, looks like I missed filling in the background between the legs and tail. I can fix that.

Monday, June 21, 2021 11/35 AM Version 2 (v2) of "Blue" - he is starting to look like a bird and the lake is starting to look brackish. (See, I fixed it.)

Monday, June 21, 2021 2:31 PM Starting to fill in the bird, but I must get the background leaves in too before it gets too far along.
