Post 358: Piedmont Regional at The Plains

Piedmont Regional Art Show at The Plains

The 76th Annual Piedmont Regional Art Show at The Plains was Friday, October 18 to Sunday, October 20, 2024 at Grace Episcopal Church. Located at 6507 Main St, The Plains, VA 20198, Sandra McClelland Lewin and I made the roadtrip to drop off our art to this very nice art show again this year.

And for the drop off and the art reception, we ran into several artists we know.

Post 357: Plein Air Painting with Michele Frantz

Plein Air Painting with Michele Frantz

On Saturday, October 19, 2024, I met with several local artists for a Plein Air Class with Michele Frantz at the Occoquan Regional Park at a very cool 9am. The artists circled around Michele, who gave us instructions and tips, and showed us samples of her plein air sketches, thumbnails and equipment.

Michele's Umbrella was definitely a topic of interest as far as tools of the trade. The 9 artists had questions on everything and were enthralled to hear the various ideas on "painting hacks". Michele showed the artists her thumbnail quick sketches that captured various points of interests around the shore line of the Occoquan River.

Finally, she released the Kracken, well the artists...and off we went.

Plein Air Painting Down by the River

Tasked with a few projects from Ms Frantz, the artists quickly spread out to find their starting points. Some did the sketching tasks, others jumped right into the painting. All scattered about finding their perfect spots to paint from.

For myself, that also involved capturing some snapshots of what I might like to paint along with the lighting that only stays "just so" for a such a very brief time. And of course, some things like wildlife (birds, ducks), boats (and kayaks), a cloud (which were at zero this day), the waves, etc last such a short amount of time, get it while you see it. You can always add in these interesting points later if you like.

Not sure we could have asked for a prettier day even if it did start with that chilly air. It quickly became quite a comfortable day with big blue sky, blue water and fall happening all around us.

These delightful and hungry ducks came along and studied us for awhile. Art critics, bah. They didn't have any helpful tips to add. Of note, if you look especially close at the tree trunk, there is a red and white fishing bobbin.

The kayakers were a load of entertainment as it was possibly their first time. We enjoying listening to their antics.

I take so many pictures to emphasize the quickly and ever changing light through the trees landing on the surfaces to show all the options provided while plein air painting.

Of course, the light coming through the trees onto my canvas on my easel was snapshot worthy too.

When the light hit just right, you could see various fishing lines streaming and sparkling from the trees, along with a second bobbin hanging from the tree just beyond this painter.

The beauty of plein air painting is painting what you see AND leaving out what you don't want to see.

Our plein air artists regathered at 12:45 to see how we were doing and ask any final questions. Of special interest to all were the various equipment and ideas that everyone uses to get the job done.

One of the artists left earlier but the rest of us collected what we created and had a great discussion on what we did.

Of particular interest was this u.go™ Anywhere™ Pochade Box of which 2 of the artists had on hand.

After the Plein Air Painting

This was my first time plein air painting -outdoors- with acrylic paint. I must say I struggled with getting the colors where I wanted in the time available. Of course, when you are new to painting outdoors, it also takes some configuring on setting up your supplies as well, so there was that too. Kudos to those that are up and running in mere minutes.

My question is - can you still call it plein air painting when you take it home to your studio and finish it up?

This blog post was written on Wednesday, October 23 - so 4 days after the class. Here's a picture of my painting on where it's at - at the moment. There are a few more things I'd like to do to it, but I am getting closer to happy.

Post 356: What I have coming up for Donna Liguria Art

What's on My Radar this Fall?

Let's see what art shows and events are coming up that I have on my radar with the Prince William Art Society (PWAS), like the annual Fall Tall Oaks Art Show on Saturday, Oct 5, with the Crossroads Arts Alliance at the Haymarket Museum Oct 6, and at other area art shows.

Art at the Mill Sept 21 to Oct 6, 2024

I currently have art up at Art at the Mill in Milwood, VA which is ongoing. The Artists Reception was Sunday, Sept 29, 2024 from 2 to 5 and there were plenty of art friends there! Along with some fellow Prince William Art Society members, Sandra McClelland Lewin and Bettie Sperty with their significant others, it was a nice afternoon seeing other area artists like Mike Flynn and Maureen Guillot, and Ann McCarty amongst so many others. Tons of fantastic art to browse! Nothing much better to than to be so inspired by all the great ideas and seeing the A M A Z I N G art up on the walls.

When you get there on the reception day, the artists get their name tags so they are easily recognized. Then the hunt begins. FIND your art!

It is rather overwhelming. Even when they have already sold a LOT of art the last week, that's still a LOT of art on the walls.

Donna is currently showing in the Art at the Mill show at the Burwell Morgan Mill, 15 Tannery Lane, Millwood, VA until October 6. See the web Gallery here (this link becomes active when the show begins and will eventually expire). A great hint is to really have a look at the link while its live to see what is selling, the price points, and the subjects.

Blue Glass Vase on Table was found on the main floor on the back wall.

I found Charcuterie Board next to where the wine was being served....very appropriate.
Sometimes you have to look low, sometimes very high: Spring at Merrimac Farm is high overhead.

Unfortunately the Mill was not actually running today - awwww.

Sandra sold 2 of her 3 paintings entered, congratulations!! And obviously, we had to find her fox painting low on the wall!

PWAS Annual Fall Tall Oaks Art Show Oct 5, 2024

Local PWAC artist Donna Liguria will be at the Prince William Art Society's Fall Tall Oaks show on Saturday, October 5 with her paintings, prints and her very popular Mini and Bookcase Art Paintings. The local art group, the Prince William Art Society (PWAS) sponsors the bi-annual Spring and Fall Tall Oaks Art Show, so this Saturday's art show is on Oct 5 from 11 to 5pm. It is right here in Lake Ridge, on the corner of Cotton Mill and Hedges Run, just off of Old Bridge Road. Rain or shine.

Examples of Donna's Bookcase Art which are 4x4 acrylic small art works with no need to hang them

Examples of Donna's Mini Art which are 3x4 mini paintings with a mini easel. I'll have lots of my Bookcase Art and Mini Paintings at the Tall Oaks Show.

The Tall Oaks Community Center at 12298 Cotton Mill Drive, Woodbridge, VA where PWAS holds the Spring and Fall Art Shows, as well as our monthly meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:30pm

Come by and see the show!

Crossroads Art Alliance in Haymarket, VA Oct 6-Nov 15, 2024

My painting of "Gunston Hall" which is part of my Virginia Historic Home Series will be in the Crossroads Art Alliance "Hometown" show at the historic Haymarket Museum at 15025 Washington St, Haymarket, VA 20169 from Oct 5- Nov 15.

I've lived all over Virginia so my 'hometowns' have varied over the years, hence one of my nearby historic Virginia homes was entered. Have you been to it yet?

Piedmont Regional Art Show Oct 18-20, 2024 at the Plains

The 76th Annual Piedmont Regional Art Show is held at the Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, Virginia from Friday, October 19 to Sunday, October 20th. Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, Virginia is the home of the Piedmont Regional and located at 6507 Main St, The Plains, VA 20198

Donna also plans to show at the Montclair Library in November and December with the Prince William Art Society and possibly be at Blue Ridge Shores in Louisa, VA for a small festival in November.

Artist Inventory Sale at the ARTFactory on Dec 7, 2024

ARTFactory on Dec 7 will be the home of this year's fall Artist Inventory Sale and I plan on attending this show as well. Mike Flynn is working with Jordan Exum at the ARTFactory to have this show -indoors!!!- which will be a very WELCOME change. The weather has not been cooperative for several of the last spring and fall shows at the Harris Pavilion in Manassas.

In the meantime, Etsy is another spot for my art and painting something new is always on my mind! Stop in at any of ALL of these art shows and say HI!!
