Post 355: Fall Art at the Mill 2024

Fall Art at the Mill 2024

Saturday, September 21 through Sunday, October 6, 2024 at 15 Tannery Lane, Milwood, Virginia at the historic Burwell-Morgan Mill is the home of the Art at the Mill art show in Clark County. This show is held twice a year, in the spring and again in the fall. And it pulls the best art all around the region. It's amazing to behold and such an honor to even be accepted in the jury process.

Dropping Off Art at the Mill

Two of my Prince William Art Society (PWAS) friends and I arranged our art dropoff time for Friday, August 30, 2024 between 1 and 1:30pm, so over the river(s) and through the woods we go!

It is quite the well thought out process as artists appointments are set up throughout the day all weekend and volunteers help with check in and setup, hanging, and arranging. Signup Genius is a great app for arranging time slots, no doubt.

Here are the three paintings of mine that were accepted to this show:

Spring at Merrimac Farm 16x20 in acrylic, unframed
Blue Glass Vase 9x12 acrylic, unframed
Charcuterie Board 16x20 acrylic, framed
Bettie Sperty, Sandra McClelland Lewin getting their art tagged by volunteer Ann McCarty (whom we got to know in 2022 at another gallery)

Once the artwork is checked in with stopping first at Step One (computer check in and art tags handed out), then Step Two (unwrapping the artwork and applying the tags), the artwork is taken by a volunteer to either hang up on the walls directly or go upstairs in the holding area (4th floor).

Over the next few weeks before the opening of the show, all of the art - paintings, sculpture, pottery, etc. will be rearranged throughout the main floor and upstairs. The bottom floor is where the actual milling of various flours takes place and the uppermost floor is art storage. Nonetheless, when the show opens, ALL artwork is viewable online when the link goes live. Many art collectors view the art and the artists can see that purchases are being made. The artwork is not shipped but arrangements must be made for pickup.

It's an amazing setup of art, basically floor to ceiling and in every nook and cranny. Visitors really need to take their time when going through the Mill because art is everywhere! I remember going to the art reception once and looking for all of my pieces and totally walked by one of mine several times before I actually SAW it! Kinda funny, but Art at the Mill is a LOT of art!

The artwork is brought in all weekend August 30 - September 1. Since we came in mid day Friday, there is still some empty wall space as yet. It will not stay that way. We love to walk around and view the incoming art once we have checked in and admire the amazing, outstanding quality. There was a sheep painting that was just glorious.

Looking out a third story window at the parking area and seeing the waterway coming into the Mill

As artwork sells, it is quickly replaced from the 4th floor holding area and their website link is quickly updated with a Sold tag on those pieces. The sold artwork is taken to the main floor and wrapped and ready for pickup.

Past Pictures Taken

If you are a history buff, just seeing the Mill in that respect is very cool in itself. But combine the visit with an Art at the Mill show to make it doubly awesome!

I highly recommend that our Prince William Art Society artists make the trip out to Art at the Mill to not only view the show and the working Mill, but to see the procedures that are so well thought out in the process of running this great art event in this quaint small town. It is quite the production, and they do it twice a year!

Let me know what you think after you see it!

We had a sandwich across the street from the Mill at the Locke Store after dropping off our art. This is the Mill from our vantage point sitting at their outdoor tables. Great sandwiches!
