Post 375: Art Delivery Day to the Mill Painting in Progress

Painting Name: Art Delivery Day to the Mill Painting in Progress

Art at the Mill is a biannual art Show held at the Burwell-Morgan Mill in the Spring and Fall. The Mill is found at 15 Tannery Lane, Millwood, Virginia in Clarke County. It is a live, working Mill AND one of the largest and best art shows that I have seen in Virginia thus far.

What Brought About this Painting?

Art at the Mill began in October 1990, although Art at the Mill Art Show has been around for years, I've only been taking part in the show since 2022 - both the spring and the fall. Well being a part of the Prince William Art Society since 2021, I had heard several PWAS members refer to Art at the Mill in reverent tones. Like a whispered awe. After seeing the show the first time, I do understand that now. Definitely.

Learn more about the Burwell-Morgan Mill here.

Here's a Spring 2025 picture I took of the Mill when delivering my art that was accepted. I've taken other pictures of the Mill as seen on my blog here and on the PWAS Artistry Spin Blog. You can look up those posts.

And by all means, follow and see the Web Gallery for Art at the Mill while the link is still available here. Getting on their radar will help you get the Call for Art for the Fall Show.

As far as the real point of what brought about this painting, in the early spring of 2025 after dropping off my artwork with another artist, we went across the street to grab a bite to eat at the Locke Store, then sat out front for lunch. Looking across the street back at the Mill, we watched other artists were pulling into the parking lot. Some times a single artist, sometimes multiple artists would then eject from the vehicle and grab their art from seats and trunks, and began walking down the sidewalk.

Hence, an idea was born from the photo above.

Painting in Progress Images…

Watch the painting as it progresses!

The painting itself started Saturday, April 3, 2025. True, I had already gesso'd and base coated a paint layer, but this moved along rather quickly yesterday as you will see. Eyeing that green of the building...hmmm not quite right in the first image.

It is the darn details for me. They MUST be there for me to feel right about the artwork - for my own artwork.

Sunday, April 4, 2025 Progress

I would imagine every artist at some point paints over a section and thinks, "That's just not right." Off goes that section with a covering of paint. In order to get the painting where you want it to go, it just has to happen on occasion. Hence the fence. A partial disappearing happened between the 2 above photos.

Hopefully, back on track...for a little while. But I do need to go out to the Mill today - there is an Art Reception to go to on this very dreary day! Off to Art at the Mill!

Stay tuned for more updates and photos to get to the final finished photo.

Wednesday, May 7, 2025. A much needed update. Worked at getting my "artists" in. Still much more to do and there is always the edges to complete.

May 8, 2025 By George, I think I finished it! The painting goes right around the edges of the artwork as per usual (for me).
