What Brought About this Painting?
A design element in a garden is to make you wonder what you will see in your next step, or around the corner, or if you take one path as opposed to another, or what is beyond that gate, walkway, or fence.

A painting can take a piece of that element too, I believe - what is on the other side of the fence or at the end of the walk way? If the painting was continued, what would I see? A sort of - If the story carried on, what happens to the characters? That is my thinking on this...I want to see what the rest of the garden looks like.

Post 119: The Koi Pond with Lily Pads, 8x8 Acrylic Canvas

Painting Name: The Koi Pond with Lily Pads

Calming waters while colorful koi glide under the greenery, and lilies rise above the surface to show their shining faces.

SKU: 05BK21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 8x8 Stretched Canvas
Price: $99.00 + Shipping
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?
I love a koi pond. It is it's own little world. Life goes on within it and around it and sometimes interacting with it. The fish, the frogs, the dragonflies just keep doing their thing. The colors and the seasons with their color changes are beautiful, and life just seems to be much more calm as you gaze upon the surface.

Post 118: There's No Place Like Home, 8x8 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: There's No Place Like Home

AKA: The Red Shoes, but more accurately, The Ruby Slippers. And she had her way home on her feet the whole time

SKU: 05BL21AC
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 8x8 Stretched Canvas
Price: No Longer Available
Edition Year: 2021
Check Availability and Prints on my Etsy Shop

What Brought About this Painting?
Wouldn't these be the most famous shoes in the world? From a movie that has long been a favorite in my family, "The Wizard of Oz". A most beloved movie, every year for my cousins, my aunts, my mom, we will watch it every time.

Saturday, May 15, 2021 9:36 PM: I may tinker with it a little more tomorrow, but the Ruby Slippers are about done.

Sunday, May 16, 2021 8:02 AM: I did tinker with it a tad and updated the final image above. Let me know what you think!

See the real pictures below from the last time I was at the Smithsonian.

From Wikipedia:
"The ruby slippers are the magic pair of shoes worn by Dorothy Gale as played by Judy Garland in the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical film "The Wizard of Oz". Because of their iconic stature, the ruby slippers are among the most valuable items of film memorabilia. A number of pairs were made for the film, though the exact number is unknown. Five pairs are known to have survived; one pair was stolen from a museum in 2005 and recovered in 2018."

It's an interesting read on Wikipedia - I didn't know that one of the pairs of shoes had been stolen and lost for a number of years.

From Nov 28, 2015: That's my mom and aunt in the background with the actual shoes encased at the Smithsonian Institute.

Just think, these shoes at this time are about 83 years old.

Post 114: Stargazer Lily, 6 by 6 Acrylic Mini Canvas

Painting Name: Stargazer Lily

I rather like a looking at a lily, and it looking back at me.

SKU: 05BJ21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 6x6 Stretched Canvas
Price: $45.00 + Shipping
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? No

What Brought About this Painting?
Stargazer is a favorite Lily of course!

From Wikipedia:
"Lilium 'Stargazer' (the 'Stargazer lily') is a hybrid lily of the 'Oriental group'. Oriental lilies are known for their fragrant perfume, blooming mid-to-late summer. Stargazers are easy to grow and do best in full sunlight. They have a fast growth rate and should be planted in full sun in well-drained loamy or sandy soil. When mature, 'Stargazers' can grow to a height of 36 inches with a spread of 10 to 14 inches with 2 to 8 flowers per stem."

I have a few planted in the front yard. I remember the first year I planted them...saw the buds grow, the lilies were just starting to open and the next day, they weren't there any more. I'm pretty sure a deer walked by and mistook them for dessert on a stick. But since then, they have bloomed every year and are always a treat to look at (not eat).

"Lily Symbolism & Colors
Lilies commonly grow in white, yellow, pink, red, and orange.
  • White lilies symbolize purity and virtue.
  • Pink (stargazer) lilies symbolize prosperity and abundance.
  • Red lilies symbolize passion.
  • Orange (tiger) lilies symbolize confidence, pride, and wealth.
  • Yellow lilies symbolize thankfulness and desire for enjoyment."
This is good. I have a lot of those colors!

Post 113: A House in Richmond, Virginia, 24x18 Acrylic Stretched Canvas

Painting Name: A House in Richmond, Virginia

I lived in Richmond, Virginia some years back as my brother once did, and a few cousins still do. It has some very old areas that are familiar to me so this was a pleasure to paint. Some artistic license taken, as this tree, when in bloom, buries the house.

SKU: 04BH21ACG
Medium: Acrylic
Size: 24x18 Gallery Wrapped Stretched Canvas
Price: Not Available
Edition Year: 2021
Commissioned? Yes

What Brought About this Painting?
My neighbor commissioned this painting from me and asked for some specific things to emphasize in the artwork.

The flower "boxes" needed to have coleus in it, the yellowish "painting" (HA! A painting of a painting!) needed to be clearly visible as it has family implications and the "Welcome" sign needed to be visible. (Thank God for a zoom feature, I thought they were birds on the welcome sign, but they were cats.)

She also preferred a "summer-time" view of the house although the photo of the house was taken in the VERY early spring. A good thing, because the Google Earth ground view of the house must have been taken last summer when the tree was in FULL bloom and you could barely see the house for the tree and shadows!

So, artistic license is a marvelous thing, I took to bending time and space and added the "summer-look" of the full tree, but left the house clearly visible.

This is the painting here:

And the photos of the house that I was working from are below:

Anyone familiar with the older part of Richmond, Virginia is well aware of these great old houses and all the great and not so great features that can be found in many of them. As you can see, there is barely any space between them, but oh, the personality and character found! I've always called them - all the nooks and crannies.

Nonetheless, all those great trees that line the streets are a part of their personalities...as well as occasionally eating the sidewalks.

Update - Tuesday, June 15, 2021 12:39 PM - It is AWESOME to do the REVEAL when someone sees their finished art piece for the first time. My neighbor Lorraine commissioned "Richmond House" for her daughter for her birthday. Happy Birthday, Alison!!

Lorraine and her daughter, Alison with her daughter, Addie

Varnish deepened the whites a bit, but the shadowing of the house seemed appropriate anyway.

I am pretty sure the painting was a hit.
